Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Grundei.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I didn’t come from the cleaning industry. My background is in tech. I built a company that was ultimately acquired by CBS Interactive, and spent years as a top-performing sales and revenue leader in that world. It’s a different universe from cleaning crews and turnover schedules, but the instincts carry over: find a broken process, build a system around it, and hold the standard.
That’s exactly what drew us to Magic Helpers.
In late 2024, my co-founder and business partner Kelly Porter and I acquired Magic Helpers STR LLC, a short-term rental cleaning and property services company serving the Austin metro. The business already had clients and cleaners in place. What it needed was an operational infrastructure built for scale: documented systems, failure-point safeguards, and a growth strategy with real teeth.
What we found when we looked closely at the STR cleaning space was a broken trust model. Hosts would wake up to a guest complaint about something a trained eye should have caught the day before. The industry had normalized inconsistency, because most operators were running it like a side hustle instead of a real service business. We knew we could fix that.
So we got to work. We built out SOPs, layered in technology, and held ourselves to a quality bar most cleaning companies in this space never talk about. Today Magic Helpers holds Super Cleaner status, ranking in the top 5% of cleaning partners on one of the industry’s leading STR placement platforms. We’re on pace for a record year, and more importantly, our hosts can actually sleep at night knowing their properties are in good hands.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, no. There were moments early on that humbled us fast.
Not long after we took over the business, we got a call from a host. A guest had checked in and the property wasn’t right. Towels folded wrong, surfaces missed, the kind of details that don’t show up on a basic checklist but absolutely show up in a one-star review. The host was upset, rightfully so, and we had no way to tell them what actually happened on site. We couldn’t verify the work. We had no photos, no inspection record, no paper trail. Just our word against the guest’s experience.
That moment clarified everything. We weren’t just dealing with a bad clean. We were dealing with a system that had no way to catch failure before it reached the guest. In the STR world, that’s not an inconvenience. That’s a host’s livelihood and their listing’s reputation on the line.
So we got methodical. We implemented a photo documentation protocol, before and after every single clean. We built inspection checkpoints into the workflow so nothing ships without a verified standard. And we started treating every turnover like there’s a guest arriving in two hours, because there usually is.
The complaints didn’t disappear overnight. But the pattern did. And more importantly, when something does go wrong today, we know exactly what happened, where it happened, and how to make it right. That visibility changed everything, both for our clients and for our own ability to grow with confidence.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Magic Helpers is a property services company serving the greater Austin metro. We specialize in short-term rental turnovers, residential cleaning, and move-in/move-out services, but the way we think about the work is less “cleaning company” and more “hospitality operation.”
Most hosts who come to us have had the same experience: a cleaner who was fine until they weren’t, no visibility into what actually happened on site, and no real backup plan when things fell through. A significant number of our clients live out of state. They’ve invested in Austin’s short-term rental market and they need someone on the ground they can actually trust. We are their eyes and ears locally, and we take that seriously.
Every turnover we handle is documented with before and after photos, managed through a purpose-built operations platform, and held to a standard we’d put our name on in a five-star review.
What we’re most proud of is the trust we’ve earned with hosts who manage multiple properties and can’t afford a surprise. That guest who checks in to find everything perfect, the linens staged, the surfaces spotless, the amenities restocked. That’s not luck. That’s a system working the way it’s supposed to.
We serve individual hosts, residential clients, and property management companies across the Austin area. If you’re tired of babysitting your cleaning situation and ready to hand it off to a team that treats your property like it’s their own reputation on the line, that’s exactly who we built this for.
What are your plans for the future?
The goal has always been simple, even if the work behind it isn’t. We want to grow Magic Helpers into the most trusted property services brand in the Austin market.
What that looks like in practice is twofold. On one side, it means creating more great jobs for our cleaning team. These are hardworking people who take real pride in what they do, and building a company that rewards that with steady work, fair pay, and a team they can count on matters to us. On the other side, it means more hosts across Austin waking up on check-in day without that knot in their stomach. More out-of-state investors who feel genuinely covered. More property managers who stopped worrying about their cleaning situation the day they called us.
We’re expanding our team, growing our client base, and continuing to invest in the systems that make consistent, five-star results repeatable at scale. The measure of success for us isn’t just how many properties we serve. It’s whether the people on both sides of this business, our cleaners and our clients, feel like they landed somewhere they can trust.
