Today we’d like to introduce you to David Garza.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Wow, where to begin. I have been in the fitness industry for around 15 years. I started teaching at a small martial art business then moved over to Life Time Fitness where I started to teach all formats of fitness classes. Yes, I even taught a pilates class 😉 I started to teaching cycling classes as well and fell in love with them (even though my first class was ‘horrible’ as my boss explained after taking the class)
I have always loved music and was trying to put music and riding together. One of my students noticed this and asked if I have ever heard of Soul Cycle. She showed me a quick clip of a class. Honestly, I thought it was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. Today I eat my words every class because I fell in love with the workout.
I was approached about opening a studio like Soul Cycle in Austin. I was sent to New York and see for myself what the hype was about. I was blown away! I was floored with the “heartbeat” and the energy of the classes! I knew I wanted to bring this to Austin. At that time, a couple of other studios were opening with the same concept. I was super blessed to have the community truly get behind me with this new workout.
After helping to open that studio, successfully, I helped open another studio and that one became a premier rhythm base cycle studio as well. During these times, I had hoped to become an owner of some sort to those studios. That just didn’t happen. I had been looking into starting a studio on my open but things just never seemed to align for me. Finally after a shift at the last place I was working at happened, I knew this was the time.
I got super lucky with an opportunity to open temporary location with the help of Keith at Sculpt Physic. He has allowed DG FIT Studio to open up and continue the dance party on the bike! So as we look for our new permanent home, we continue to dance, shake and keep moving forward riding to the beat!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I loved the starting process, so many small things and challenges along the way! The biggest challenge is just not knowing what to do and to learn just about every day how to run things. I am lucky to work with people who see my vision and are willing to help and support us. So the road is not smooth but we are able to roll with the bumps.
We’ve been impressed with DG Fit Studio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a rhythm-based cycling studio that focuses on giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy a completely unique workout on a bike! In 45 min, we will dance, climb, speed and lift a little to have you feeling fatigued and full-filled at the same time. The bike that goes nowhere and everywhere at the same time and will only give you what you put in. We are a community not bound by walls or space but by its people, athletes and family. We ride on the commonality of a beat but we all know it’s much more than that, it’s a pulse, a heartbeat of life.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think the studio concept will change. How? I guess we shall see…..
