Today we’d like to introduce you to David Houston.
Hi David, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been a professional musician all my adult life, but I took a hiatus from the business for several years. I got back into it in 2011, performing in cover bands and as a session player. In 2016, I started The Night Club – High Energy Party Band because I wanted to have a band specifically designed for private events, weddings, corporate events et cetera. Working as a “hired gun” is great, and I still do those kinds of gigs, but I wanted to create something special of my own. We’ve been lucky enough to play some really special events, including halftime at the AT&T Center for the San Antonio Spurs, and in 2019 we played the Top Gun with Val Kilmer event at Camp Mabry (Austin, TX), presented by Alamo Drafthouse.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building a successful band always presents challenges and bumps in the road. It took some time, and no small amount of trial-and-error, to get the right mix of musicians and to get our name out there. We’re not alone in this, of course, but the pandemic definitely had an impact on our bookings, both for private events and public shows. Thankfully things are beginning to open up again and we are happy about that, although of course, we want everyone to stay safe and take precautions as needed.
The Austin area has a vibrant music scene full of artists who support each other; that said, in the area of booking wedding reception gigs and private events, your fellow musicians are also your competition a lot of the time! That’s just part of the business, though; and while it’s challenging, it’s also motivating to keep working on making The Night Club the best it can be.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Night Club – High Energy Party Band?
The Night Club is a variety cover band made up of professional musicians with decades of experience in playing all kinds of music — especially classic and current hits. We specialize in private events and weddings and provide a fun and upbeat show for our event guests; we have an extensive setlist, and we’re able to customize the song selection for our clients’ needs. We take pride in being a band that combines personality with professionalism, putting on a unique and entertaining show for our clients while also giving them peace of mind that the event entertainment is in good hands!
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
There is some truth in homilies like “the harder I work, the luckier I get” and “luck is when preparation meets opportunity”; but these are not guarantees, of course. They just refer to the tendency for your odds of success improving as you make better choices. I’ve learned that you have to get out there and not only risk falling on your face but actually doing it a few times! (Figuratively *and* literally.)
