Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Espinoza.
Hi Elizabeth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started golfing in March of 2023 while I was living in Seattle. I signed up for ‘ladies night’ lessons and went every Wednesday. I’d only ever golfed with my boyfriend because that’s the only person I knew that golfed in the area. Then when I moved to Austin in April of 2024, I really wanted to meet new friends and saw that Butler Ladies League existed so I started to go to those events. I always met cool people but I kept hearing the same thing, “I’d like to play more but I don’t know other female golfers” or something along those lines. After about the 8th girl telling me basically the same thing I decided to take action. I realized there was a pretty big community of female golfers in Austin but we didn’t know each other. So, I created an Instagram, @girlsthatgolfatx, and a SweatPals page. I chose a random Saturday morning in September, posted a meet up time at Hancock Golf Course, and hoped people would come out. From there, I kept posting golf meet ups every 2 weeks and started growing Girls That Golf. Now we have biweekly meet ups, scrambles, and social events!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been a bumpy road but great nonetheless. Getting in contact with different courses, reaching out to fill sponsor spots, coming up with events, and coordinating everything has been very time consuming. I have a 9-5 job and run Girls That Golf on the side, so it keeps me very busy. Managing everything can be stressful at times but growing the group to what it is today has made it worthwhile!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a local Austin organization focused on creating a community for female golfers and getting more women on the golf course. We hope to create welcoming opportunities for women of all ages and skill levels to learn and improve their golf game, while also growing their network. We host biweekly meetups, scrambles, and social events. The purpose of the group is to create community and friendships that will last past the golf course. We love our new golfers just as much as those that have been playing since they were kids. Overall, we want people to know that it’s a super welcoming group that supports all its members. We love to chat and enjoy our round of golf together. We hope that more women will get out on the course and enjoy the game!
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
My dad has always said he’s lucky and I like to think that I got some of that luck too. I think that I’m lucky to have such a great group of women that are a part of the organization. The ladies that I met from day one have been so supportive. Apart from them, my sisters have been super supportive as well. From hyping me up to keep going to coming to my events to help take pictures or check people in. I’m very lucky to have them. And I’m also lucky that my boyfriend bought me my first set of golf clubs in 2023 and made golf fun, which is how I started golfing in the first place!
