Exploring Life & Business with Jasmine Bertrand of Foundations Movement

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Bertrand.

Hi Jasmine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Originally, in school I was studying Kinesiology, the goal was to work with athletes as a Strength and Conditioning coach. I was also a Heptathlete and wanted to set my eyes towards the 2020 Olympics. That dream got cut short with a shoulder injury that ended up keeping me stuck in an injury cycle out of College. Everything I knew seemed to get taken away from me all at once. With grades slipping, my support system dwindling, and the injury getting worse I eventually had to stop competing. A few years out of school, I was referred to a Chiropractor who eventually told me that I was just having soft tissue problems and my best bet was to work along side a sports massage therapist to work on and around my rotator cuff muscles. That one visit with the massage therapist gave me so much relief and motion that I thought was never going to be attainable again. That visit alone changed how I saw my own body, recovery and what it means to get the best from yourself and that was the moment I wanted to go into massage therapy, still helping athletes but instead to bring light to a more neglected area in muscle therapy.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been smooth, especially going into private practice. Everything seems to be outside of my comfort zone but it requires me to challenge what I believe I am capable of, which has been so much more than I expected. So though it hasn’t been smooth, who I am has grown a lot, and has been worth it and thankfully that growth has allowed me to improve as a person and practitioner.

We’ve been impressed with Foundations Movement, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Foundations Movement is a massage therapy private practice specializing in chronic pain using Deep Tissue, Mat based massage and Flexibility/Mobility to provide thoughtful, personalized bodywork rooted in long-term healing. I believe in meeting you where you’re at sessions are going to look different for everyone so a plan of action and understanding of what each individual responds to and needs is necessary. Body work, movement and consistency in my opinion have been key to improving soft tissue issues and my approach is to help you find and solve those with you.
I am proud of the clients I work with, I’ve been lucky to work with people that come in and commit themselves to become better. I am thankful to work with people that align with similar values and strive to be a better human. You have the ability to feel better and it comes by the actions taken. Every client that I have had the pleasure to work with wants better for themselves and does the work required and because of that I have the pleasure of becoming apart of many success stories.
I want readers to know that you have every right to feel confident and comfortable in your body and there are actionable steps to doing that. Whether from old injury, a surgery or being tight since childhood, there’s a way to move and feel better.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Never stop learning whether it’s reading or taking classes, you’d be surprised what you can learn from someone just by listening and reflecting a little. That goes for those in the field and out of the field but I’ve learned quickly that there are so many support groups especially in the Austin massage therapy community the main thing is to get out of your comfort zone and don’t be so quick to tell yourself that’s not for you.
