Exploring Life & Business with Jazmin Lozano of La Boujee Housewife

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmin Lozano

Hi Jazmin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Being a first generation of immigrant parents, life was a lot of learning as you go. I received my B.S. in Biochemistry from UTSA with no plans after graduation, but I knew I loved to eat, host, and give back to my community. While I was receiving my degree, I attended and lead medical brigades (volunteer work and fundraisers for our community). Upon graduating, I was fortunate to land a full-time job in the medical field. When COVID struck, I transitioned to working from home, which left me with plenty of free time. I was able to follow my dream and start my own business. I created my social media page La Boujee Housewife in 2019. It started off as a food blog but quickly transitioned into a business page after receiving so much support and inquiries for my charcuterie boards during the pandemic. I know what you’re thinking—starting a business during a pandemic, scary right?!? We began our business on 3 core values: giving back to the community, inclusion for all financial backgrounds, and being environmentally friendly. Being first generation has thought me to work hard for what I want and value what little I have. As a wife and business partner to an immigrant, we understand the struggles and adversities our minority community face. That is why we created a give back program that will allow the community to nominate someone deserving of a free box. We understand that sometimes people are unable to afford a charcuterie board, or simply deserve to be recognized for their hard work. Our give back program allows them the opportunity to experience our Boujee boxes free of charge— happiness & confidence packaged into a box.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
By no means has it been a smooth road. Opening a business at the peak of a pandemic comes with its challenges. One of the biggest obstacles was gaining the trust of our clients. Understandably, there was a lot of fear of exposure to COVID. From the start, we have put in place safety protocols to ensure the safety of our customers and our employees— Orders are made with gloves, masks are worn when delivering, etc. To add another curveball, we faced a historical winter storm here in Texas just a few weeks ago. This challenge made it difficult to have access to the foods needed, not only for us as a business, but also the people in our community. Given the stress and lack of access to food, after the storm, we offered free boxes to any customer who could safely pick up. We also worked closely with clients to reschedule any orders that had to be cancelled due to the weather. It has also been challenging being a first-time business owner while juggling a full-time job in the healthcare field. However, I would say the biggest obstacle that I have faced is being an introvert. I created a business that revolves around socializing. When you make or order a charcuterie board, you’re often socializing with others. When customers pick up an order, I like to interact with them and get to know them on a personal level. While I am still an introverted person, running La Boujee Housewife has allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone and push myself to socialize with those around me. I have met some of the most amazing people and created closer bonds with others thanks to my business.

We’ve been impressed with La Boujee Housewife, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
La Boujee Housewife is a minority owned and budget friendly grazing company. We understand not everyone can afford this luxury experience which is why we keep all financial backgrounds in mind when setting our prices. Along with keeping our prices reasonable we also know most people are knew to grazing boards so we have options for beginners to expert grazers. We pride ourselves in inclusion for everyone so you can indulge in your very own personalized Charcuterie experience!

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
We see the charcuterie industry flourishing, especially once the pandemic is over. Charcuterie boards have been around for some time now, but they’ve recently received more attention. The demand for boards is growing everyday. We are constantly developing new ideas and creating new items to ensure we stay with the trend (we try to stay ahead, if possible) to generate a successful business. I have big, big dreams of running and operating a few successful cafés and restaurants that center around charcuterie boards. I want to make this small business into my full time career, maybe even write a how to: host book. The ultimate dream landing a cookware line at Target. Imagine my name, my brand and even my face plastered all over the aisles— A girl can dream right? For now, one step at a time. Charcuterie boards now, a cafe next.
