Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Garcia.
Hi Jorge, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Founder and owner of Carbonero Tequila. I grew up in a small town in Mexico, Nueva Rosita Coahuila; a Coal mining town founded by ASARCO.
I grew up in a cattleman Family. My father worked the ranch, my mother had a meat market in town.
‘When working the ranch, I always had the ambition to go north.
I did my last year of high school in Crookston Minn. After high school I looked at SMU, couldn’t make any friends in Dallas, so I moved to Austin, where I started taking college classes at ACC.
With my ranch experience, I decided to become a cattle and horse trader, made enough money to start a furniture store, then a Restaurant named after my family’s nickname – Las Curras….
my brother Marco and I had an incredible amount of passion for cooking since we grew up watching my grandmother cook incredible food. So together we started Curra’s Grill, worldly famous for the Interior, Regional food from Mexico, and the avocado margarita. Throughout the years, I grew an incredible passion for tequila and Mezcals, I remember watching my grandfather enjoying a shot of tequila before lunch or dinner.
He never used limes, always an apple, fig, peach or plums. After 25 years in the business I decided that my son Daylon Garcia, who had grown up in the restaurant and had an incredible passion for it, could now take over. And I could start my own tequila.
Carbonero tequila, I named it as a tribute to my grandfather who had been a coal miner for over 50 years and all of my childhood friends who lost their fathers coal mining. The tequila has now won Gold Medal.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can never complaint on how wonderful my life has been; I have had difficult times trading cattle, working the furniture store, and the restaurant. However, the wonderful people and lots of close friends from Austin have made growing up in Austin a wonderful experience.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Carbonero Tequila?
Carbonero Tequila, set apart as a Boutique style tequila, we only make 5K liters at a time, has no artificial color or flavors, exactly how I learned from my grandfather. It was awarded the Gold Medal in 2020
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I am steamily grateful to my parents, my uncles who were rough with me while working the ranch, my grandparents, and brother and sister who have been right at my right hand while creating all of my endeavors. Allison and my children for enduring the sacrifices every time I had a business idea.
