Exploring Life & Business with Joycelyn Bennett of Bennett Disability & Consulting Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joycelyn Bennett.

Hi Joycelyn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I run a consulting firm that helps people who are stuck — either in the disability system or trying to build a sustainable business. I give them the exact steps to stop struggling and actually move forward.

My career began in healthcare administration, where I learned early on how complex systems can limit people who don’t fit a traditional mold. While I respected clinical pathways, my strengths were always in structure, policy, and strategy, which ultimately led me back to my original interest in law — particularly at the intersection of law, healthcare, and compliance.

I completed my law degree in 2019, and during that time I experienced a major life disruption that forced me to step back and reassess everything. As I began rebuilding, I tried to navigate the Social Security disability system myself and was denied despite having medical documentation. That experience revealed a critical gap: outcomes aren’t driven by need alone — they’re driven by strategy.

Alongside this, I had spent years working in government and regulatory environments, developing expertise in compliance, grant writing, and oversight, while also maintaining a long-standing background in business ownership, business management, and business law. Over time, those experiences came together into a strategic framework I developed — the B5 system — which I now apply across my firm.

Today, as Managing Director, I operate one consulting firm with two distinct divisions: disability strategy and business strategy. In both, my role is not advocacy alone, but consulting — assessing, structuring, and moving cases or businesses forward with intention.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.

Professionally, I encountered limitations early on — particularly in healthcare administration — where advancement often depended on clinical credentials rather than strategic or operational skill. As mentioned in the last question, during law school, I experienced a serious health crisis that forced me onto disability, ultimately costing me my home and requiring me to rebuild my life step by step.

Navigating the Social Security disability system myself and being denied despite having medical documentation were among the most challenging moments. That experience was frustrating, confusing, and humbling — but it also became formative. It showed me that outcomes aren’t driven by need alone; they’re driven by strategy, structure, and how information is presented within complex systems.

Those challenges reshaped how I work today. Instead of reacting to systems, I learned how to analyze them, anticipate decision points, and move through them intentionally. What felt like obstacles at the time ultimately became the foundation for the strategic approach I now use across both disability and business consulting.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Bennett Disability & Consulting Group?
At its core, my firm is built around clarity and strategy.

We operate as one consulting brand with two divisions — disability strategy and business strategy— unified by the same communication framework but applied differently depending on the context. I developed the B5 system as a way to translate complex information into clear, actionable guidance, whether we’re communicating with decision-makers, clients, or the public.

What truly sets us apart is intentionality. As a small, strategy-driven firm, we are deliberate about the work we take on and how we support clients. In disability matters, that means assessing whether a case can realistically be moved forward with strength before engagement, so clients aren’t left waiting years on outcomes that aren’t achievable. In business consulting, it means helping clients gain clarity before they invest time or resources in the wrong direction.

Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is that we don’t rely on volume or shortcuts. Our work is thoughtful, disciplined, and human. I want readers to know that our brand stands for honest guidance, strategic communication, and helping people move forward with confidence when systems feel overwhelming or unclear.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memories come from the years I lived in Belize, where my mother is from — and that’s also where my love of travel began.

When I was eleven, my family moved there, and I spent several formative years surrounded by cousins, community, and a deep sense of freedom. Life felt simple and safe. We walked everywhere, played outside for hours, and didn’t worry about much beyond where we were meeting next. Even when things were imperfect — like power outages — they became part of the fun. We’d play games, laugh, and stay connected.

I returned to the United States as a teenager, but those years in Belize, Central America remain some of my happiest memories. They shaped my appreciation for freedom, adaptability, and human connection — and they sparked a lifelong love of travel. That sense of openness and perspective still influences how I approach life and work today.
