Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Lewis.
Hi Kaitlyn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a therapist, entrepreneur, helper-at-heart, and someone who believes deeply in the healing power of being truly heard. I started out in solo private practice because I was craving something slower, more intentional that honored the deep work I knew therapy could be. I loved my clients, loved the one-on-one relationships, but I kept seeing how hard it was for other clinicians to get started, how easy it was to burn out, and how many clients were slipping through the cracks. I loved the work, but I quickly saw the limitations—not just for me as a provider, but for clients too. I knew there had to be a better way to offer therapy that was accessible, compassionate, and impactful.
That’s what led me to create Heard Counseling as a fully virtual group practice grounded in the belief that therapy should be human-first, client-centered, and inclusive of everyone’s lived experience. I wanted to build something sustainable – not just for myself, but for other therapists who felt called to this work but overwhelmed by the business side of things.
At Heard, our vision is simple but bold: to ease access to the mental health care people deserve, in a space that values empathy, compassion, and understanding. We’re here to offer healing and hope to those who’ve ever questioned whether therapy could truly be for them.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business as a therapist is vulnerable. I had no business background, no MBA, no formal training in how to hire, lead, or build infrastructure. I just had a deep belief that therapy could be done differently, and a lot of late nights Googling how to make that happen.
When I started this journey, I didn’t have all the answers. I ran into fear, financial stress, imposter syndrome, and decision-making fatigue. I kept wondering if I was the right person to lead something like this. What if I couldn’t make it work?
I tried things that didn’t land. I moved too fast at times, too slowly at others. I felt pulled between being a clinician and building a business. But every challenge taught me something. I began to see that growth doesn’t come from having it all figured out. It comes from staying true to what you believe. Even now, I am learning every day. What keeps me grounded is the commitment to building a practice that centers people over systems and presence over perfection.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Heard Counseling is a fully virtual group practice grounded in relational care. We are deeply committed to making mental health care feel human, accessible, and aligned with real life. Our team believes that healing should be available to everyone, not just those who can take time off during the day or navigate complex systems. We currently have availability, including evenings and weekends, so clients can get the support they need without having to fit healing into a traditional 9-to-5 schedule.
We also prioritize supporting our providers. Therapists at Heard get to focus on what they do best: holding space and helping others heal. We handle the admin, marketing, and infrastructure, while fostering a community where creativity and care are central to everything we do. No one thrives in a system built on burnout, and I want clinicians at Heard to feel empowered to do their best work without sacrificing their well-being.
To us, therapy is a relationship, and we treat it as such.
