Exploring Life & Business with Katharine Deveise

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katharine Deveise.

Hi Katharine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My passion for photography started a bit later in my life. I purchased an A6000 Sony on a whim in 2003. I quickly became fascinated with the resolution and details that I could see behind the camera. Like many people who take to photography know, the next expensive piece of equipment is never far behind!

My passion for every facet of photography grew fast and furious. I adore portraiture and love capturing the curves, expressions and nuances of all God’s creations. My current focus is to continue networking and learning from the best in the business. I hope to take a little piece of wonderful from many artists to create my own unique brand and style. My motto is “stay humble and always listen to advice”. My goal is to embody a person’s true essence through a single shot. My photography idol is Edward Curtis. His ability to capture the soul of his subjects was poignant and undeniable.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The challenges and struggles have mostly been self-inflicted. I become disheartened or discouraged at times by viewing all the AMAZING Instagram images from so many insanely talented artists. I remind myself to keep improving, learning, and using these images as inspiration. Respecting where I am in my journey and pushing myself outside of my comfort zone helps me to keep the focus where it belongs.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I started KatLee D. Photography, LLC in 2018. My goal was to create a brand that produces exceptional quality images while delivering my client exactly what they want or need. I’m a firm believer that a sales pitch leaves a customer pressured and frustrated. I let the product sell itself and I believe my clients appreciate this. My specialty is high school senior sessions. Creating a session to remember for a soon-to-be graduate is a very special process and I feel blessed to be a part of those memories. I also specialize in professional headshots, model comp cards, and fine art portraiture.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Never compare yourself to others but always take their advice to heart. If a person takes time out of their day to critique your image, consider yourself lucky!
