Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathleen Morton.
Hi Kathleen, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was raised in Galveston, Texas and lived in many cities across the US before setting down permanent roots in Austin. I was raised by a single mom who is an incredibly hard-working pediatric medical doctor. Growing up, I knew I also wanted to work in a helping profession and had a passion for the creative arts, which led me to minor in Fine Arts and major in Psychology. I moved on to obtain a dual Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy and Art Therapy, at Notre Dame de Namur University, in a program that was blooming with trainings on mindfulness, experiential therapies, guided meditation, and many other exciting, hands-on, mind-body therapy methods. Upon moving to Austin, I worked in the mental health field in various settings as a group home parent, an in-patient clinician, an art and meditation group facilitator, and in residential treatment for teens and adults. Working in these settings with individuals of all ages led me to decide to become a foster parent myself, along with my husband. In the years since we have grown our family, and in 2016, I moved into private practice and established Austin Mindful Therapy,
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I experienced ongoing domestic violence in my younger years and was lucky to recover from the resulting PTSD symptoms with the help of counseling, meditation, and the support of friends and family. I am exceptionally grateful to have had the foundation and encouragement I did along the way and grateful that I continued to move forward, even when some obstacles seemed insurmountable. This is the reason I hold a special place in my heart for working with domestic violence survivors and folks in recovery from PTSD. It is also part of why I became a group home parent and later, a foster parent. Living through difficult situations first-hand left me with the knowledge of how incredibly meaningful it is to have the right support at the right time and how important it is to be that support when we have the ability.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Established in 2016, Austin Mindful Therapy® has grown steadily as a group mental health practice over the years and is regularly developing additional services for children, teens, adults, and couples. We specialize in EMDR, Mindfulness Practices, DBT, CBT, and other client-centered methods. Our team is full of clinicians who love working in the field, and we engage our clients with kindness, patience, and intention. We are beyond grateful for the opportunity to provide support for individuals and families here in Austin, with a clinical team that continues to expand in an effort to be of service to our community and create a lasting, positive effect on our corner of the world.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
As a business owner, I believe that risks are necessary to grow and to thrive. With training as a creator and artist, I am always looking to improve, learn, experience, and create. Having recently completed Ketamine Assisted Therapy Training, I am currently interested in the measured risk of legally introducing psychedelics into mental health recovery and how the convergence of therapy and psychedelic experiences may create new avenues for personal and interpersonal healing. Of course, as a mom and a professional, I also believe in safety first!
