Exploring Life & Business with Kimberly Hoggatt of Divergence Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Hoggatt.

Hi Kimberly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a nerdy, creative, and fiesty Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor and the Owner of Divergence Counseling, LLC. I’m a Native Texan, military brat, and a high-achieving, highly sensitive person. I have a law degree from UT Austin but realized halfway through law school that a legal career was not for me. During a small claims case mediation, I realized I was way more interested in the underlying motivations and feelings that were driving folx. So, I went back to grad school at UTSA.

While working full-time in higher education administration and career development at UIW, TLU, and UTSA for ten years, I realized I really wanted to be my own boss. It took several years working in a group practice in the evenings to save up and establish a client base, but I was finally able to launch my own practice a few years ago. My physical office is in San Antonio, and I offer virtual counseling throughout Texas.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a counselor and a woman, I received very little education about how to create, run, and grow a business. Marketing and financial literacy have been a real challenge as well. With the help of fellow counselors, badass businesswomen, and my wonderful spouse Steven, I have worked through self-doubt and imposter syndrome and now consider myself a recovering perfectionist.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I take a person-centered and existential approach to counseling – aspiring to help clients find and create meaning, identity, and direction in their lives and relationships. Divergence Counseling provides fully affirming, LGBTQ+ inclusive counseling for teens, adults, and couples. I love working with teens and young adults as well as those identifying as high functioning 2E (twice exceptional: gifted and talented + some kind of neurodiversity such as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ADHD).

I also enjoy counseling and educating fellow helping professionals and offering community presentations and continuing education sessions. I have experience presenting to medical professionals, educators, and mental health providers in a variety of settings. Topics include but are not limited to: team building, True Colors, Myers-Briggs, Strong Interest Inventory, and Enneagram assessments, niche development, client care, counselor burnout, and LGBTQ+ affirming care and advocacy.

My physical office is in San Antonio, and I offer virtual counseling throughout Texas.

Any big plans?
I am now a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor, providing supervision virtually throughout the state of Texas. I am currently accepting LPC-Associates for supervision. This Fall, I am looking forward to getting my three current supervisees up and running. I am also in the early stages of writing a book for other counselors like me to embrace and thrive in their divergent ways of thinking and being.
