Exploring Life & Business with Lauryn Bosstick of The Skinny Confidential

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauryn Bosstick

Hi Lauryn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The blog started in college when sororities were charging a fortune. I thought to myself, what if I could make a sorority online for free, where everyone can get tangible, valuable tips and learn from other women? So I did. I started The Skinny Confidential while I was working 2 jobs and going to college. It became quite apparent that the community was interested in mostly beauty and wellness. So after 10 years of blogging, horrific double jaw surgery and a group of like-minded women aiming to be the best versions of themselves, we launched our ice roller. Now 4 years later we have a whole range of wellness products, The Skinny Confidential HIM & HER Show with over 1 million audience members, and an incredible team.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are fires to put out every single day, but that’s the game. All entrepreneurs know that it’s never a smooth road. Going from a solopreneur, doing everything myself, to having a team was a struggle for me. Also, the behind the scenes of running multiple businesses is not glamorous and I think people need to talk about that more. To build The HIM & HER Show we spent countless hours driving from San Diego to LA, recording all the time, not making a dime.

Now, the challenging part of having a business is making sure that I’m focused on the micro and the macro, meaning I want to focus on the day to day and being in the present but also thinking about strategy and purpose with the big vision. Merging them together is frequently on my mind. I spend a lot of time thinking, walking, reading, being quiet, and meditating. Because when you meld these things together, really big things can happen. But you can get into trouble if you focus too much on one and not the other.

It’s also challenging as a mother of 2, soon to be 3. That’s why my time is so important to me and I always invest in my time. This means outsourcing whatever I can so that I can free up time for important work opportunities or quality time with my kids.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Skinny Confidential. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Skinny Confidential is all about upgrading and romanticizing your self-care routine.
Our high quality products are beautiful and effective, and focused on improving and upgrading your daily routine. We believe that the foundation of your life starts with your commitment to daily habits and that small improvements make for big results.

The most rewarding thing is that our products make people feel good and help them spend a bit of time on themselves. I’m very proud of that. Also, the entire process is very rewarding, from the idea to the physical product and everything that happens in between.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
If you don’t take risks, you remain stagnant. My husband and I always talk about launching quickly and adjusting later. There is no perfect time, there is no perfect product. You have to DO. And that’s very important in business. There are a lot of people who remain ‘forever students’ because they don’t DO. You need to execute your ideas, otherwise they’re just ideas. That means you need to take risks. Launch, listen to your audience, adjust to their feedback. There are no rewards without risks so it really is a necessity when it comes to business.
Also, invest in yourself. If you don’t take a chance on you and your ideas, then who will?
