Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcela Diaz.
Hi Marcela, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Best Scoops began with a dream rooted in passion, family, and hard work. Our journey started in 2014 in Austin, Texas, when we first entered the world of authentic Mexican ice cream through Michoacana Natural Ice Cream. With the support and collaboration of our family, we gained invaluable experience in customer service, product quality, and the heart of the ice cream business.
After years of learning and growing in the industry, we felt ready to take the next step—creating something of our own. In 2019, inspired by our experience and driven by a desire for independence, the idea of Best Scoops was born. Together, with my husband Silverio and our children Karen and Victor, we began searching for the perfect place to open our shop in the community we proudly call home.
Our goal was simple: to bring delicious, handcrafted ice cream and snacks to our neighbors in a warm, welcoming environment where everyone feels like family. What began as a leap of faith has grown into a beloved local business, thanks to the overwhelming support of our community and the strong foundation built on family values.
At Best Scoops, every scoop represents tradition, unity, and the joy of sharing special moments. We are proud of our roots, grateful for the journey, and excited to continue serving our community with love, creativity, and authenticity.
Slogan: “Best Scoops – Where every scoop feels like home.”
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We officially opened our business only three months before the COVID-19 pandemic began. The world changed, uncertainty took over, and many small businesses struggled to survive. It was one of the most difficult times we had ever faced. Yet, even through the fear and unknown, our community never stopped supporting us. Thanks to our loyal customers, we were able to stay open and move forward during that heartbreaking global experience. Their support carried us through the hardest moments.
During those early days, a customer once looked at me and said, “You are so brave to open an ice cream shop surrounded by so many big ice cream companies.” I smiled and replied with confidence:
“We are different. We offer fresh, natural, homemade ice cream with a Mexican touch.”
There were moments of challenge, doubt, and exhaustion—but every struggle shaped our story and brought us to where we are today. It wasn’t an easy road, but it was a meaningful one, and in the end, every obstacle had a beautiful purpose and a happy ending.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Best Scoops by Michoacana?
I am a graphic designer by profession, and I have also dedicated over 14 years to working in the educational field as an Educational Assistant. Along the way, I have continued to nurture my passion for design by taking on freelance projects alongside my daughter from time to time.
I grew up learning the importance of exceptional customer service from the best mentor I could have ever had—my father, the owner of a small family business in Mexico. He was widely recognized in our community for his dedication to service, kindness, and strong business values, and those lessons have stayed with me throughout my life.
Today, my husband, my daughter, and I proudly work together as a team to run our business. We share the same vision: to treat every customer with respect and make them feel welcomed, valued, and at home. What I love most about our business is the opportunity to share a piece of Mexico with our community through our unique flavors and authentic treats.
My daughter plays a special role in our journey—she is the creative mind behind the new ice cream flavor creations, constantly bringing fresh ideas that reflect innovation and tradition.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I would describe myself as a positive, friendly, and people-oriented individual who genuinely enjoys helping others. Throughout my academic journey, I have actively participated in extracurricular activities, including school plays, dance performances, and student clubs. I value leadership and always strive to be a responsible and dedicated student. In the other side I was very interesting in helping with customer service in my dad’s shop since at was 11 year old and at 17 I remember helping my grandma selling products by catalog and my aunt encourage me to help her selling jewlery after this experiences I still love sells.
One of my strongest qualities is my passion for continuous learning. I am always eager to develop new skills, and whenever I have the opportunity to take a course or learn something new, I embrace it with enthusiasm.
Creativity is a big part of who I am. I have a deep passion for painting, writing, jewelry making, and crafts, and I enjoy expressing myself through handmade art and design.
