Exploring Life & Business with Marcus & Autumn Mohon of Mohon Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus & Autumn Mohon.

Hi Marcus & Autumn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We are a husband and wife duo who founded Mohon Interiors in 2001 upon the belief that everyone should live with beauty and style. We strive to create transportive environments that are inspired by love, joy, and the celebration of life.

Our story actually began right here in Texas. Marcus is a native of southeast Texas and he was earning an economics degree from Baylor University before realizing that his life’s passion was rooted in more creative pursuits. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Marcus was selling antiques in Fredericksburg when we met and he made the decision to enroll in design school at The University of Texas shortly thereafter; a decision that changed our lives forever! Together, we opened Mohon Interiors over 20 years ago and our firm has been creating memorable interiors ever since.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur and business owner doesn’t come without its fair share of challenges. For instance, Marcus was working for a design firm in 2001 when the tech bubble burst and the firm was forced to let him go. We decided to open Mohon Interiors on September 1, 2001, ten days before the attack on the World Trade Center. We had a 1-year-old child, had just closed on a new home, and we had no clue what the future might hold. Then, when the world shut down in 2020, our family of six sat down to Sunday dinner and we posed a question: When challenges present themselves, who do we want to be? When faced with the unexpected and so many unknowns, will we be compassionate, generous, and gracious to others? Will we care about our neighbors and look to meet their needs and not only our own? Over the past 20 years, we’ve never seen any of these challenges as a reason to panic; each was a problem to be solved and an opportunity to live with purpose and intention.

Despite that rocky start, our business has grown by leaps and bounds since 2001, and we quickly discovered that the pandemic-related downturn for the interiors industry wasn’t going to last very long. Our commitment to fostering integrity and strength within both our family and our business has made it possible to build a community of collaborators, colleagues, and clients that continue to make this journey a truly remarkable one.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We believe that home is as much about people and place as it is a physical structure. We specialize in romantic interiors that exhibit graceful symmetry and an approachable sense of comfort. Inspired by sincere connection and the thrill of exploration, we curate warm, welcoming homes that invite joy and celebration into each and every one of our client’s lives.

What does success mean to you?
Nothing compares to the feeling we get when a project is complete and our clients are overjoyed. We find a sense of freedom and adventure in the design discovery process, yet we are always more concerned with the warmth in which people live than the look of any one element. Success is when we create a home that feels like your personal respite; an environment that is not only beautiful but also restorative.
