Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Ryan.
Hi Matt, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My career in fitness began in April of 2019 when I started Heavy Mettle Fitness and started personal training with clients in Austin. However, my experience in the fitness industry started several years earlier as I fell in love with the sport of bodybuilding while I was a sophomore in college.
Growing up, I struggled with weight and body image, and as my passion for fitness grew, I came to the realization that I wanted to help others achieve the sense of freedom, accomplishment, and fulfillment that I had threw fitness/strength training.
Shortly after I began training with clients in Austin, the pandemic hit and shut gyms down. I was nervous about my new business and what this would mean for me in my career going forward. I had built up a sizable clientele and fortunately most of them wanted to train in a virtual setting throughout the initial phase of the pandemic.
As gyms opened back up, I resumed training in person and continued to grow my clientele. About a year later, Heavy Mettle Fitness had acquired a clientele that necessitated a transition into our own studio, and hire local fitness professionals to join our team. Since, December of 2021, we have been operating out of our own private studio space near the Domain, and in that time we have helped hundreds of Austinites achieve their weight loss and strength training goals.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As an entrepreneur, I’ve always found that my biggest struggles are internal. I approach everything I do with a sense of urgency and purpose, and when things don’t go my way or align with my ideal timeline, I’m faced with the internal battle of learning to let things that are out of my control go.
Additionally, I’ve learned that being a leader doesn’t always mean that you have to teach those who work for and with you, sometimes you’re called to guide them and encourage them to employ their skillset in a way that aligns with your goals and vision.
