Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricardo Galindo.
Hi Ricardo, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I fell in love with BBQ when I was around 10 years old. I would help my father by gathering wood, and as I got older, I started helping with the fire and meat. I’ve been cooking all my life, from backyard to competitive. After working 30 years in the oilfield industry, I retired in 2019, moved to Baja, California (Mexico), and opened my BBQ food truck. We did great and sold out every weekend until Covid hit the country. We moved back to San Antonio in late 2021, where I now do catering. I also work at a retail outlet BBQ Outfitters in SA, with the main store in Austin. I also have a YouTube channel I started in 2018 (Ric’s BBQ and Specialties), for which I still produce videos with help from sponsors like SuckleBusters rubs, Green Mountain Grills, and BBQ Outfitters. This venture has also led me to sell my line of bbq rubs. ( Galindo’s Texas BBQ )
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Covid was a huge factor in slowing my business down, like everyone else. I couldn’t have even started my bbq journey without the help and support of my family. However, God is good; we are back on track to success.
As you know, we’re big fans of Galindo’s Texas BBQ. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with the brand?
Right now, I sell BBQ through catering/ direct sales. I am in the middle of updating my food truck and should be up and running mid-year. Right now, I’m most proud of my BBQ rubs and seasonings. I have three, Texas Trinity (All Purpose), Texas Beef/Hawg (Beef and Pork) rub, and my Texas Freebird ( Chicken Seasoning. My BBQ YouTube channel helps promote my sales and Facebook and sales at BBQ Outfitters. If you’re in San Antonio or Austin, stop by the store and get ya some!
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and are any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
At first, it was changing menu items to help lower costs for our customers and us. We also offered delivery for those who did not want to be out and about. Ultimately we decided to put the business on hold for a bit.
