Exploring Life & Business with Sara Rojas of A little piece of México

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Rojas

Sara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Can’t believe myself! I’m blessed to be part of Voyage Austin. Not even in my craziest dreams I got the view of being doing an online interview here

I don’t want to do my story really long, I just want to let you know that ANYONE that is able to have a dream, is able to make it happen.

And just to clarify we sell Talavera Pottery ( Mexican handcrafted pottery) made by family & friends in Mexico, but let me tell you the story behind

I came from Mexico at the age of 17, to live with my parents again ( I want to add that I have been working since I was 12 ) but coming tho a whole new town, without knowing the language & 0 social skills made it really hard, plus If that’s not enough, I came from Mexico after a very difficult and failed relationship in a very vulnerable time without knowing what to do or where to start remaking my life

Shortly after I found out that I was pregnant, I had no job, no money…

but the most important was that I felt happy to finally be with my family and they were the ones who gave me all the emotional support to continue, my mom (Elvia Gonzalez) and my father (José Rojas) to whom I thank for all my triumphs and everything I have achieved, I also have my sister ( Alma Rojas) who is the one that continues sharing my struggles as she is the one covering the store’s back ( and myself’s) every time it needs

I started working in an old Restaurant Tex Méx as a dishwasher just 1 month since my daughter was born.

I was fired from work, this led me to find a job in the kitchen of another restaurant where I finally ended up being a waitress and I was able to start saving a little money, during that time I already brought a few handmade cups that my family makes in Mexico and I began to sell to colleagues and friends

I was happy to finally have a job, to be able to make extra money with things that reminded me of my country and with the motivation that I would give my daughter everything she needed… this is where it all began

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As incredible as it may seem to some people who have just met me, I am an introverted person, my social circle is very very small and my language barrier only added seasoning

I have always been afraid of not doing “the best I can do” to give up without having given my best effort and I think that on this occasion that was not a defect however this caused a lot of stress, a lot of uncertainty (it still does but on a smaller level)

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about A little piece of México ?
As I mentioned before, fear has always accompanied me and that does not mean that it is bad, my God, my family, my daughter ( Sofia Rojas ) and the support of my community also do it and it is much bigger than anything else. Just as clinging I am very passionate and my culture is an endearing thing that I love, my business is a 100% reflection of my person, my difficulties, my roots and my culture. I want people to feel it, see it and I think they do it!

Our Talavera and Mayolica ceramics are made mostly by family and partly by very talented friends and families, each piece is a sign of a Mexican dedication and talent that has been inherited for centuries
We offer pieces of art in Talavera that are one in a million, unique and unrepeatable. In addition to the fact that in A little piece of Mexico we want to bring back the memory of Mexican folklore, everything that is celebration, joy and fun crossed by handmade pieces
