Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanisha Mark.
Hi Tanisha, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story starts at 13 years old in middle school – when I bought my first fashion design kit at a Scholastic Book Fair. I had already fallen in love with fashion and outfits but that design kit made me realize I really enjoyed the process of creating a look. I started to pursue it – as much as a teenager could – into high school. Then at 16, my guidance counselor told me that I was “too smart” to go into fashion (whatever that means) and that I should go into finance. As a 16 year old with no voice of her own (and who was taught to do as she was told), I didn’t express my disagreement and I did as I was told. Fast forward to 2023, I ended up going on a yoga retreat with The Medicine Collective that reignited my pursuit of a career in fashion (it literally changed my life). I attended a workshop that prompted us to think about when we didn’t trust our intuition – and I was brought back to that meeting with my guidance counselor. It was on that yoga retreat that I decided to go after my dream and that no one could stop me.
From there, I invested in training and mentorship – since I didn’t take the traditional route of fashion school. I got a certification from FIT through Yellowbrick and learned different styling philosophies and techniques from different stylists in the industry. I also got my certification in Advanced Color Analysis. Of course, I started by styling my friends and family to get experience and slowly started working with other women – styling them for events, revamping their wardrobes, or just helping them find their best colors. People are starting to refer me which makes me feel like I’m actually having an impact on someone’s life through the work that I do.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Is business ownership ever really a smooth road? They don’t say it’s personal development on crack for nothing. There have definitely been some struggles along the way – most of them, for me, have been in regards to mindset. This journey has really given me the opportunity to learn things about myself, my beliefs, my fears, my blockages – and that has been the biggest struggle because you tend to learn those things the hard way and releasing it doesn’t happen overnight.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I’m an Austin-based Personal Stylist & Color Analyst for soul-led female entrepreneurs reclaiming their power through style. I believe that finding your style is part of finding yourself and that when your style is energetically aligned with who you are at your core, it can change your life. In my process, I use the analysis of your masculine and feminine energy and get to the heart of who you are and who you’re becoming, then I translate that into a wardrobe that feels like coming home to yourself – instead of one that makes you feel like you’re dressing up as somebody else. I help female entrepreneurs look the part in their business while still prioritizing self-expression and energetic alignment in their style, so that they can show up unapologetically and make more impact in their lives and businesses. I’m proud of the fact that my approach to style is a more holistic one.
I offer color analysis and personal styling packages in-person to the Austin area, as well as online. My signature package, The Level Up Style Experience, is a transformational package that helps women level up their style, elevate their brand presence, and align their wardrobe with their next level of success.
What’s next?
I believe that style should be accessible to as many women as possible, so I am in the process of creating a course that walks women through my exact process of building an aligned style foundation. I think women simply being empowered with the basic components of what works for them in style can be extremely powerful. The sooner they can start feeling better about their bodies and unapologetic about expressing themselves through style, the sooner they can start taking up more space and making more impact.
