Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Latuff.
Hi Troy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I didn’t start in a boardroom- I started in the field.
Early in my career, I was a co-owner of an HVAC, plumbing, and electrical business in Minnesota. That experience taught me everything the hard way. How to run operations, take care of customers, and most importantly, how difficult it is to find and keep good people.
About 15 years ago, my family and I made the move to Austin, Texas, which really changed the trajectory of my career. I stepped into leadership roles with one of the largest home services organizations in the country, eventually serving as VP of Franchise Development. That gave me a front-row seat to the industry at scale, and one problem kept showing up everywhere: hiring.
That’s what led me to start The Blue Collar Recruiter. What began as a recruiting service has grown into a full ecosystem supporting the skilled trades. Today, we help companies hire and develop talent through recruiting, training with the Blue Collar Virtual Trade School, and job marketing through Blue Collar Recruits, our job board built specifically for the trades. We’ve also built AI-powered hiring systems to help businesses move from transactional recruiting to scalable hiring engines.
From there, we launched The Franchise Recruiter to help entrepreneurs find the right business opportunities (many of them in home services) which ties directly into the same mission of building strong businesses with great people.
At the same time, I’ve continued to own and operate service businesses, including One Hour Air Conditioning & Heating of the Treasure Coast, FL and launching Discount Water Heaters. Staying active in the field keeps everything we build practical and real.
At the end of the day, everything we’re doing is about elevating the trades, helping business owners grow, and creating better career paths for the next generation of blue collar professionals.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—and I don’t think it’s supposed to be.
Like any business owner, there’s always risk. Starting and growing a business comes with real financial pressure, startup costs, and a significant time commitment, especially in the early years. There were times where you’re making big decisions without having all the answers, and that can be uncomfortable.
One of the bigger challenges for me specifically was stepping into the recruiting space without coming from a traditional recruiting background. There was a learning curve there, understanding the nuances of sourcing, candidate experience, client expectations, and building scalable systems around it.
But I’ve always believed you don’t have to be the smartest person in the room, you just have to be willing to build the right team. So one of the best decisions I made was hiring people who were better than me in the areas I wasn’t strong in and learning from them along the way.
At the end of the day, the challenges are what shape the business. They force you to get better, think differently, and build something more durable. And in our world, that’s really where the growth comes from.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Blue Collar Recruiter. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Blue Collar Recruiter was built to solve one of the biggest problems in today’s workforce- finding and keeping great people in the blue-collar space.
At our core, we help blue-collar businesses of all kinds attract, hire, and develop talent across every role, from field technicians to office staff to leadership. But what really makes us different is that we didn’t stop at recruiting.
As we worked with more businesses, it became clear that hiring challenges weren’t just about filling positions- they were about systems, training, and long-term workforce development. So we built an ecosystem around that. Today, that includes full-service recruiting through The Blue Collar Recruiter, job marketing through Blue Collar Recruits (our job board built specifically for the trades), training through the Blue Collar Virtual Trade School, leadership development through Blue Collar Masters, and workforce pipeline initiatives like Boots to Blue Collar, which helps transition individuals from the military into careers in the trades.
We’ve also leaned into technology, building AI-powered hiring systems that help companies move from reactive, one-off hiring to more scalable, repeatable recruiting processes. And through The Franchise Recruiter and our Blue Collar Recruiter franchise model, we’re helping entrepreneurs step into this space and build businesses of their own.
What I’m most proud of is that everything we’ve built comes from real-world experience. We’re operators, not just advisors. We understand the urgency, the pressure, and the opportunity because we’ve lived it ourselves.
At the end of the day, our mission is simple: elevate the trades. We want to help businesses grow with the right people in place, while also creating real, meaningful career paths for individuals in the blue-collar workforce.
There’s a massive opportunity in this space right now, and we’re focused on helping both sides of the market take advantage of it.
How do you think about luck?
I think what most people call “luck” is really a combination of timing, preparation, and being willing to take action.
There have definitely been moments in my career where things lined up at the right time, whether it was moving to Austin, stepping into leadership roles, or launching businesses when the market demand was there. But those opportunities only mattered because I was willing to take risks and put in the work behind them.
On the flip side, there have been plenty of situations that didn’t go as planned, decisions that didn’t work out, investments that took longer than expected, or challenges that forced us to pivot. At the time, those don’t feel like luck at all, but looking back, they usually end up being some of the most valuable learning experiences.
If I’ve been “lucky” in anything, it’s been surrounding myself with great people, team members, partners, and mentors who are better than me in key areas. That’s probably had a bigger impact on my success than anything else.
So I don’t rely on luck, but I do believe in putting yourself in the right position, staying consistent, and being ready when opportunities show up.
