Exploring Life & Business with Zheng Zeng of Honeysuckle Acupuncture Clinic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zheng Zeng.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started to study acupuncture due to my mother’s health problems. My mother suffers from knee problems and asthma, when she was at her 20’s, she struggled on walking and standing, her regular doctors always suggested her knee replacements, but her older sister suggested her to try acupuncture and Chinese herbs, which helped a lot. She recovered from her knee pain and her asthma was much better. When she was at her late forties, she started riding bicycle, she started exercises. With all her changes, my parent strongly suggested me study acupuncture instead of go to regular medical school.

My father was a university chemistry professor, my mother was a teacher in an auto mechanic school. But I grow up with seeing them using herbs and acupuncture to improve their health conditions. My parents and I had a conversation when I was in high school, we talked about that in the countryside, in some area where lack of medical instrument, lack of medical services, lack of medicine, but acupuncture practice don’t require a lots of instrument or medicines, can still help people. This really directs me go to study acupuncture.

I graduated with an Outstanding Student Award of the Sichuan Province (State) from Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1991. After that, I continued to study and did researches for acupuncture three more years. Since then, I practiced and taught acupuncture for eight years in the teaching hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. As a female practitioner, I put my most interest in treating gynecology problems, fertility problems in my practice. In 2002, when AOMA (Graduate school of Integrated Medicine) need a acupuncture and herbal teacher, I came to Austin and started teaching and practice in Austin, Texas.

I enjoy my acupuncture practicing being able to make a difference in people’s lives, no matter it is decreasing pain, improving range of motion or restoring function. My practice is still heavily on helping improve women’s health. It is so rewarding to see my patient’s symptoms relieves: such as PCOS patients start to ovulate regularly, endometriosis patients mentioned their pelvic pain and menstrual cramps almost gone, or peri-menopause patients have no more hot flashes, night sweating. Another wonderful thing is developing and maintaining relationships with patients. They will send me cards or stop into the office even years after they’ve completed their fertility acupuncture treatment – it’s so meaningful!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Mostly it has been a smooth road in the first several years of my practice, even though I was graduated as an honor student, but still feel there are so much I need to learn. I’m glad that I faced it early enough, so I can sit down and reviews the information

As you know, we’re big fans of Honeysuckle Acupuncture Clinic. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We practice acupuncture, Dr. Yuxing Liu is a Ph.D. of acupuncture, his focus is on pain management, treating allergies and digestive problems; Zheng Zeng is specializing on acupuncture for women’s health, including fertility acupuncture. We accept most insurances if your plan covers acupuncture.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I had a chance teaching and practice acupuncture for several months in Tel-Aviv, Israel in 1996. It was the time, no computer, no internet, no digital books. I went to Tel-Aviv with several books and thought that I can remember all the info I need, I was shocked when I was in the clinic, the common diseases I saw are huge difference from in China. I regretted that I should not be that confidence and not bring enough books. It was a big lesson that I learned, I need to study more and read more.

After I went back to China from that trip, I spend most of my rare time on reading a Chinese Medicine books (instead of my favorite Chinese Kong Fu stories) and wrote a lot of notes. It was like the sponge suck the liquid. I feel I got improved a lot.

When I came to US in 2002, I remembered brought lots of books with me. Today, there is internet, digital books, it is much easier. But my trip to Israel really helped me stand in a higher level.
