Faviela Parrilla of Austin on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Faviela Parrilla and have shared our conversation below.

Faviela , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Answering this question, brings a soft smile. Hugging trees brings me a lot of joy. I love to go visit an old tree they have held space for me and my emotions, to just be able to sit there, to be present. Even when I go traveling, one thing I will do every day is to find a tree to hug, stand by or sit by. It is like a beautiful remainder to myself that I am grounding, I belong here, and I am always supported by trees. I can always lean into them. Trees are a reminder to myself to be patient, to be thankful for the present moment. Sometimes it’s dormant season, and the only thing I need to do is to be still. Even when I am stressed at work, I just take a minute to stand outside or have lunch by a tree, and I feel calm and supported. It is automatically a joyful experience like waves in my heart.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?

These are all designed to nurture the mind, body, and soul as one interconnected system. Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I honestly will say that the relationships that I have lost, the relationship that have pushed me to reshape myself and to take a deeper look at the internal roles I play in the dynamic. Especially in regards to mental health areas, because it made me lean into gratitude, and compassion. Most importantly the relationships that I have lost from family, friends, to lovers helped me come face to face with anger, sadness and rage. These relationship have pushed me into a spiral, into regret and reactivity, and yet I’m thankful because when the time comes, I have had to face all my own shadows and accept that I am capable of rage into destruction. So, they have pushed me to take mental health seriously, to slow down and reflect on my boundaries, and look into grief. Grief is always a reshaping experience. The relationships I have walked away from and the ones that walked away from me.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering is part of life, and we are are all going to experience it in different ways. It’s the inevitable and it’s temporary if we choose to learn and move forward. Suffering has taught me the difference between attachment and detachment. It has helped me to value the present moment to breathe into this moment. This life it always gone to be like a pendulum. It’s going to swing both ways. Just like joy, suffering is also temporary, so stay present in both.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
This one is very spicy for me. I am very protective of my family roots and teaching. I am very private when it comes to my family and how we interact and guide one another. I am very protected of my family overall. I am also very protective of my own spiritual practice and beliefs. It’s a big part of who I am so, I don’t allow anybody to place a label over me or my practice. I am very protective of my Afro Caribbean roots and everything that represents, I carry that with me. I will speak Spanish loud and clear, I will dance salsa and reggaetón, I love to listen to drums and in the sacral of my space to dance to them, I love my prayer and ritual space. I don’t share that with all people either.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe I am doing what I am born to do, and what my heart desires at this stage of my life. It is a journey with a lot of ups, and downs and in between. Most importantly I am learning to stay present and enjoy the learning curve that come with doing what I love and what I believe I am born to do.
