Hidden Gems: Meet Ashley Martin of The Nurtured Flamingo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Martin.

Hi Ashley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In my early twenties I had some health issues pop up that ended up causing chronic pain and a slew of other symptoms. It wasn’t until I started seeing a Chiropractor that was focused on who body approach to healing. After a couple months I finally felt better, had answers to why I was feeling the way I did and had an actual plan to continue on my healing journey. This sparked my interest in body work. I have been a licensed massage therapist for over 10 years now. For most of those years I focused on helping clients manage chronic pain and developing healthy self care habits for longevity. Once I became a mother I realized the importance and impact massage has on the rapidly changing body of a pregnant woman. I learned so much about myself through my journey of motherhood. Each postpartum period had its own challenges and I realized I wanted to become a doula to better serve this very special population. My care for the families I work with is very intimate and curated to their specific needs. Merging Massage Therapy with Doula care has been so rewarding.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have to say I have had a pretty smooth road venturing down this path. I think my biggest struggle has been just believing in myself and what I am capable of. Change can be scary but in order to grow we must go through discomfort to truly expand.

We’ve been impressed with The Nurtured Flamingo, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a Birth Doula and a Licensed Massage Therapist. I chose the name because Flamingos lose their pink color while caring for their young due to exhaustion and nutrient depletion. I find human parents go through a similar experience. I am here to support the parents, the flamingos. My massage practice is mobile, so I go to clients homes and I work primarily with the Perinatal community. The Doula support I offer ranges from mostly home birth clients and some hospital clients. I really love to educate my families about birth and what postpartum can look like. It’s important for parents to be informed on what to expect and all the potentials this way theres less of a shock and blow to their nervous systems when they finally embark on their parenthood journey.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Home Birth Honey has been one of my biggest supporters over the years. They cared for me during my pregnancies and took me under their wing when I decided to finally become a Doula. I am really fortunate to know such authentic and passionate women. Olivia Roirdan, she’s been such a supportive pillar in my life and is now working with me as co-doula! The amazing clients that have been so loyal and supportive. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. My children and husband, for teaching me every single day how to be a better person and for inspiring me to help others.
