Hidden Gems: Meet Ashley Thiel of Sunshine Street Bookkeeping

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Thiel.

Hi Ashley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My husband and I both grew up in Lubbock, Texas, and after I graduated from Texas Tech in 2005 we were married. We pretty much immediately moved to Austin so that my husband could help start a CrossFit gym, CrossFit Central, with his sister and brother. A couple of years in we welcomed our first of three kids, and at that point we decided that I would stay home with them.

Fast forward to 2020 – I was hired by an amazing tech company where I wore many hats, including working in bookkeeping. Unfortunately, the company did not make it and closed its doors in the summer of 2024. I’ll never forget the day I closed that office for the last time, it was the very same day I got my first bookkeeping client.

Looking back, I truly believe God was working in my life, gently pushing me in the right direction. I had never planned to start a bookkeeping business, but in many ways, the business found me, and I couldn’t be happier.

Today I work remotely with my amazing clients while also homeschooling my three kids and staying very involved at our family’s gym. I feel incredibly blessed to live this life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say there have been many struggles per se, but owning a business definitely pushes me outside of my comfort zone all the time. I often find myself doing things that feel a little scary, and there is always something new to learn. Running a business requires constant learning and adapting, and I feel like I’m continually being challenged to grow.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sunshine Street Bookkeeping?
I am a small business owner of a bookkeeping business based in the Austin, Texas area. I specialize in helping other small business owners stay organized, keep their financials up to date, and always be prepared for tax season. My ultimate goal is to make sure that my clients feel supported and that their monthly bookkeeping is accurate and current so they can use their numbers to better their business decisions and not have to scramble during tax season or when they need reports.

I pride myself on building relationships with my clients and being available whenever one of us has questions. Most of the business owners I work with are ongoing monthly clients, but occasionally I take on new clients who need significant catch-up work or help fixing mistakes in their book, and sometimes both.

Honestly, I love cleaning up someone’s bookkeeping. It feels really rewarding to take that burden off someone’s plate and bring order to their finances. I also genuinely love bookkeeping itself, I guess I’m just a nerd at heart!

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is having the privilege of doing a job I love, working with amazing business owners, continuing to grow as both a person and a business owner, getting to homeschool my children and instill those same values in them, and spending time outdoors, in the gym, or with a good book and a cup of coffee. Why? I guess it’s just the simple things that bring me joy!
