Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Texas Sugar Glider Rescue.
Can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
ATX Sugar Glider Rescue is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the well-being of sugar gliders. Too often, people adopt these unique animals without proper research, unprepared for the commitment required to help them thrive. As a result, many sugar gliders are rehomed multiple times throughout their lives.
Our mission is to educate current and future owners, rehabilitate neglected gliders, and place them in permanent, loving homes. All donations and adoption fees go directly toward veterinary care, nutrition, and the overall well-being of the gliders in our care.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Funding and finding appropriate foster homes are our biggest challenges.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Austin Texas Sugar Glider Rescue ?
Rescuing can be as heartbreaking as it is rewarding, we celebrate our wins when we have them and learn from our losses so we can better help the next ones.
The Real Cost of Rescue
Let’s talk about the difference between a rescue and a rehome. While these terms might seem interchangeable, they are quite different in practice.
A rescue is typically a glider that comes from an unhealthy or unsafe environment. These gliders often need medical intervention, rehabilitation, or intensive care before they can be adopted out. A rehome, on the other hand, is a glider coming from a safe, stable home who simply needs a new family due to life changes or other non-health-related reasons.
A good example of a rehome would be Juni and Gus. They were on a proper diet and well cared for. While they did need a cage upgrade, their previous owner was leaving for college in another country and was unable to find them a new home in time. Their situation was safe and loving, just in need of transition.
Most gliders we take in, however, fall under the rescue category. They are often suffering from poor diet, injuries, lack of basic care, or need procedures like neutering before they’re adoptable. Very rarely do we receive gliders that can be adopted out right away.
Take Buddy, for example. He is definitely a rescue case. He was abandoned, on a poor diet, had a cage that was too small with unsafe items that caused injuries to his tail, fingers, and toes. He was diagnosed with Giardia (a parasite) and Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) due to malnutrition, and he was also intact. As a single glider, Buddy will be adopted out at $200. His medical costs alone—including vet visits, diagnostics, and neutering—have totaled approximately $613 so far. That number doesn’t even include ongoing care such as food, a cage, safe wheel, and other safe cage accessories. Due to severe dehydration and diarrhea from Giardia, he required subcutaneous fluids twice daily, along with sterile needles, syringes, and supportive care. Thanks to the community’s support, we were able to cover his medical costs, and he’ll soon be ready for his forever home.
Currently, neutering costs us $224.57 per glider. For example, Merrin and Pippen—another bonded pair abandoned by their previous owner, were in an unsafe wooden cage without a wheel or proper accessories—were both intact. Their neutering alone cost about $449. We adopted them out as a bonded pair for $450.
We do not profit from our work. Every adoption fee goes directly back into the rescue to support future gliders and maintain necessary supplies such as cages, toys, wheels, and a proper staple diet.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we run entirely on donations and adoption fees. All donations are tax-deductible and go directly toward helping these gliders get the care and second chance they deserve.
