Today we’d like to introduce you to Buddy Hachar.
Hi Buddy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
“You mean to tell me if we had a bunch of gear available, we could rent it out on a regular basis?” I said, “Yes, dude!”
This was the conversation my friend and I were having seven years ago when we combined our hoarded rock and roll equipment to start the music equipment rental business that eventually morphed into Boss Radio Music Services.
My life has primarily been consumed by drumming in bands, touring the world, putting on events, working sounds for live shows, managing bands on tour, making records, promoting artists, etc. This also included a 10-year corporate stint as Director of Event Technology for a national event production company. Most of my teeth were cut in a time before social media. You couldn’t just DM somebody to get in their head about making things happen.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Certainly not! Every day is a struggle. At present, keeping this business alive during the pandemic has probably been the craziest challenge. We literally went from barely getting by to being completely dried up in a matter of weeks.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Boss Radio specializes in backline.
Backline is all the music gear up on a stage during a show.
When you have multiple bands sharing a stage with a tight schedule, it makes sense to have somebody in charge of the equipment they are using and orchestrate and maintain where this equipment moves around too and gets used during a show.
If you are putting a show on, we’ll reach out to your bands, figure out what everyone needs, and we make sure the artists have all the music equipment they need to have a great show without everyone trying to scramble around getting the gear on/off the stage.
This equipment rental is also great for touring bands coming in from overseas or bands who want to use some nice gear for an important tour. Studios rent gear from us for recording, artists love us when they want to test something out for a month before they make a purchase decision. Festivals rely on the backline heavily as all their artists are coming in from all over the place and it makes sense to have the gear ready on stage instead of having 100 bands loading gear in and out all day.
This usually bleeds into other aspects of event production, and we also help out with providing crew for events (i.e., sound techs, tour drivers, merch sellers, stage managers, etc.).
I think what sets us apart from similar businesses is that we do offer a lot of services beyond backline rental, and our staff is made up of experienced musicians capable of filling multiple roles. So our clients get to know our crews on many different levels of the production realm. That and everyone who works with us is here because we love the bands we work with and take these shows on with full accountability.
The same goes for what we pride ourselves in brand-wise and what we want readers to know about our offerings.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
The lower the risk, the lower the reward. I do enjoy a gamble here and there.
