Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolynn Brower
Hi Carolynn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The Sam Sees Foundation was founded in honor of my twin brother, Sam, who died by suicide during our freshman year of college. His passing was a devastating and life-altering experience, but it also illuminated the urgent need for accessible mental health resources and compassionate support for both struggling teens and grieving families.
What began as a deeply personal tribute quickly evolved into a mission-driven organization. The Sam Sees Foundation provides therapy scholarships to teenagers from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, supports youth mental health programs like the UT Dell Medical School’s Youth Mental Health Center, and delivers free bouquets to families who have experienced the loss of a teen to suicide — a small but powerful reminder that they are not alone.
Since its founding, the organization has grown into a global network of volunteers, partnered with national brands such as Kendra Scott and Kona Ice, and launched awareness campaigns to reduce stigma and spark conversation around youth mental health. While I never anticipated leading a nonprofit at this stage in my life, the impact we’ve made affirms our purpose every day and reinforces my commitment to honoring Sam’s legacy through meaningful action.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Starting and running a nonprofit while being a full-time college student is one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done. What people often don’t see are the countless hours behind the scenes — from building a website and managing a volunteer platform to handling fundraising, outreach, and all the unexpected costs that come with running a 501(c)(3).
There are so many hidden expenses that quickly add up: maintaining a professional online presence, covering subscription fees for essential tools, and even trying to recruit and retain dedicated volunteers — all while trying to balance classes, exams, and a college schedule. It’s truly a full-time job, and the hardest part is not being able to give it my full time. I care deeply about this cause, but I also have to be realistic about my capacity as a student.
Despite the struggles, I’ve learned how to be resourceful, ask for help, and stay committed to the mission — even on days when it feels overwhelming. It hasn’t been easy, but the impact we’ve made so far keeps me going.
As you know, we’re big fans of Sam Sees Foundation. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Sam Sees Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting youth mental health and suicide prevention. Founded in memory of my twin brother, Sam, we provide therapy scholarships to teenagers from underserved communities, support local mental health initiatives such as the UT Dell Medical School’s Youth Mental Health Center, and send condolence bouquets to families grieving the loss of a teen to suicide.
What sets us apart is our deeply personal approach and commitment to direct impact. Despite being a student-led organization, we’ve formed partnerships with brands like Kendra Scott and Kona Ice and have built a global network of volunteers. We are proud to offer tangible support while fostering meaningful conversations around youth mental health.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We are actively seeking passionate individuals who are interested in taking on executive or leadership roles within the Sam Sees Foundation. As the organization continues to grow, we are in need of dedicated support in nearly all areas — from day-to-day operations and outreach coordination to fundraising, marketing, and volunteer management.
Currently, I am managing most responsibilities on my own while attending college full-time, so any support — whether through time, expertise, or resources — makes a meaningful difference. Those looking to get involved can help by assembling outreach teams, managing projects, or assisting with strategic planning. Of course, donations are always welcome and directly fund therapy scholarships, flower deliveries, and youth mental health initiatives.
