Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Garcia.
Hi Cristina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Cristina Garcia and I am a “rare unicorn” as I was born and raised in Austin, Texas. I grew up in Northwest Hills and attended Anderson High School. I decided to attend Louisiana State University for their love of sports and their cajun culture. Entering college I had NO idea what I wanted to do. People ask “What did you say when people asked you what you wanted to be when you grow up when you were little” and honestly I cannot even remember what I said at the time because it was always changing. I was constantly changing. My dad was in politics and my sister who is two years older was majoring in political science so as much as I wanted to be different from them I ended up taking a political science class my freshmen year and enjoyed it. Then as Sophomore year came along I took an interest in living in LA and working with the socialites of the world so I decided to add on a major of public relations. I loved what I was studying for both degrees and thought I knew exactly what I wanted. I traveled the world for my semester abroad and that made me question again what my purpose in life was but I continued to do what I thought was best. Once graduating from LSU in the midst of a global pandemic I was so unsure where my life was heading or where the world was heading. No one was hiring, I thought all that school for nothing. Until August where I found a job in Washington D.C. for political advertising. It wasn’t exactly what I wanted to do but at the time I was lucky to be offered anything. I learned so much for that job the ins and out of digital and tv advertising. I was meeting elite politicians left and right. It was a crazy election year I LOVED the thrill and fast paced environment I was in. Then election was over and everything was slow paced. The co-founders of my company split up and I decided to stay with my boss who was moving back down to Texas. I thought I’m from Texas this is a great opportunity to go back home and make a name for myself there. As my boss was struggling to get his new business going I found The Social Hour in my free time. One of my moms friends was like “you’re young do you know anything about social media?” and me thinking about all the social media classes I took in college was like heck yeah I’ll do this for you and it turned into my side hustle as I was getting more clients. After I realized my boss was giving me false hope in succeeding by staying in his stumbling business I decided to part ways and do The Social Hour full-time. Was it scary? Absolutely. I was freaking out about how can I run a business at 23 year old. What experience do I have? I thought 40 year olds own businesses. But I kept pushing and working that hustle to make it where it is today and for that I’m entirely grateful.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Lol quite the opposite. I think when trying to be an entrepreneur at such a young age a lot of obstacles get in the way. A lot of people have doubted my experiences and my work. It’s difficult when you tell people yeah I hated my job so I opened up my own business. It’s tough because I have that mind and that determination it takes to be an entrepreneur but a lot of people don’t see that right off the bat. I’ve pitched my business and gotten a lot of no’s but also have gotten some yes’s. So it takes courage to really push for what you want and feel successful about your accomplishments.
Also when I first told my family and friends about The Social Hour I don’t think anyone thought I would actually make it into a career and a successful business, so to see that I am striving to do that gives me great pleasure to show the world what I am capable of as an entrepreneur.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Austin is my home it was where I learned to drive a car, where I had my first night out, where and who I am. While some Austinites are getting fed up with the growth of the city I am really loving it. I love hearing about new restaurants and places to go to and love meeting the new people who come from far away. I will say I hate the traffic, we gotta figure that shit out. But Austin is such a unique city that has everything you can want. It’s such a great place to call home.
