Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Shaughnessy and Becca Sharp. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Becca and Emily are neighbors who met at a local meditation group and discovered a shared passion for education and mindfulness. Becca is a certified children’s librarian and a mom with more than ten years in the education industry, while Emily is a writer and community builder with a background in teaching and the arts. They both live in Austin, Texas.
At Kind Kids Company, we believe that compassion and empathy can change the world and that those values need to be learned and practiced.
It takes a lot of time and energy to hunt down the right books and activities to teach social-emotional skills, so we’ve done the work for you! Our mission is to make it easy for parents, caregivers, and teachers to integrate these important lessons into everyday life.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The logistics of creating a website, managing payments and scheduling shipments has been the most challenging part of getting our business up and running. We are a two-woman operation and wear a lot of hats so juggling these administrative and technical tasks while simultaneously attending to our full-time jobs was definitely tricky!
We’ve been impressed with Kind Kids Company, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a subscription box company for children that encourages literacy, mindfulness, empathy and emotional awareness. We send our subscribers monthly “Kindness Kits” that include books and activities designed around a particular theme. While there are many children’s subscription boxes on the market, our brand is built around social-emotional development and supporting parents and caregivers in raising kind, empathetic humans! Each box is thoughtfully planned and curated using our combined experience in education, writing, and child development. We try to feature local authors and newly-published books whenever possible and represent diversity in the book themes and characters.
We are so proud of how quickly we’ve grown and built a loyal customer base in such a short time. It has also been exciting to see local bloggers and social media influencers promoting our boxes and brand!
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
We have learned a lot about how to approach and respond to obstacles and “failures.” We’re not afraid to try something new knowing it could potentially fail but also knowing that we will learn and grow from it. Instead of feeling defeated by criticism or mistakes, we try to re-frame them as learning opportunities and not take it personally. We hope to be constantly evolving as a brand, so any feedback is good feedback!
