Hidden Gems: Meet Frank Lopez of Churro Burro Atx

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Lopez

Hi Frank, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Started off working restaurants as a cook, quickly running the kitchens, getting promoted from sous chef to chef, learning different aspects of the business and cooking skills at each different place. My last big job was being a food service director for corporate business that had kitchens and opening a restaurant with a good friend, one day I was tired of it all, burnt out, took some time off, then became a ride share driver, a long old friend called telling me she started this churro business that is doing pretty good and could use my help. I was always good at fixing concepts and made this my challenge. It had all the right ideas, just a few suggestions. She asked if I could work the events and I loved it. It was the right amount of work for me, still in the cooking realm, still got the adrenaline rush and passionate of what we were serving. Started in 2018 and at the end of 2022 my friend Jessica asked if I wanted to buy it, she threw a number at me that was doable and I took the leap, scary at first, lot of learning curves. Things are constantly evolving. Changing the business as clients and the economy change.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The hardest part was not knowing how to use the apps, was my website correct? What’s hosting? Csr? Being overwhelmed with work, everytime I got an email, how to answer it, men are to the point, woman want more detail. At first I needed help, with quotes, talking to clients, in a year I now do it alone.

As you know, we’re big fans of Churro Burro Atx. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

We airfry our churros so no hot oil, we are normally inside the building next to the bridal table or close to the action, from a wedding venue in the middle of nowhere to the top floor of a high rise downtown Austin. Two sauces of your choice, decorated table, an attendant serving our fresh made to order churros for your guests.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
You have to try whatever crazy idea that comes to you. I bounce ideas with my chef friends, together we tweak my idea, and make it happen. Meet others in your industry. I’m fortunate to meet other vendors that love my product and help coach me on how to navigate the business, what places are good, where to stay away. I promote business that I work with when I see that they have a good product, employees are trained. Passionate of their work.
