Hidden Gems: Meet Garik Himebaugh of Eco-Stylist

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garik Himebaugh.

Garik Himebaugh

Hi Garik, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was in graduate school, I started a habit of chasing my fears. I took an acting class because I was mortified about performing in front of people. I started rock climbing because I’m afraid of heights. I started building a startup because I knew I wanted to, but the idea of doing so was quite daunting. So, I did a Startup Weekend event, and I won. 3 startup accelerators and 6 years later, we have Eco-Stylist: your guide to find and shop sustainable clothing. And our newest product: an affordable, sustainable personal styling subscription.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As with any startup, our journey has been filled with countless challenges. However, our perseverance and patience have been the driving forces behind our success. We’ve had to test numerous products and solutions, some of which didn’t achieve product market fit. In such cases, we either moved on or made adjustments and continued testing. Our endless curiosity has been our greatest asset in navigating these challenges and staying on course.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Eco-Stylist?
At Eco-Stylist, we are on a mission to connect people with the best clothing brands on Earth. Our commitment to sustainability and ethics is not just a claim; it’s a proven fact. Our brands outperform the industry norm by a staggering 15 times in terms of ethics and sustainability, giving you the confidence that your fashion choices are positively impacting.

For example:

  • 78% of our brands are making progress on living wages, with 60% already paying most of their clothing makers a living wage (for context, that’s 15-30x better than the average fashion brand).
  • 93% of all our brands use a majority of more sustainable materials like hemp, linen, TENCEL, and organic cotton across their entire brand.
  • 98% of our clothing brands meet that criterion (when you exclude shoe and accessory brands from the above).
  • 83% of our brands share detailed information about where and how their clothes are made.
  • 59% of our brands share detailed information about the rest of their supply chain, such as where the cotton was grown and the fabric was dyed.

Our styling subscription has created the easiest way to build a more sustainable closet.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Most kids make a lot of mistakes. And everyone faces adversity at one or more points in their childhood. Looking back, I’m most proud of how much I changed. Even during my childhood, I made massive shifts. For example, from being bullied at one point to getting into school fights to becoming a pacifist. And when I look back at my experiences, like the alienation. I experienced in high school, I’m proud of the adversity I overcame and how it helped me become who I am now.
