Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Sloan
Hi Jessica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into the entertainment industry started right here in my hometown of Austin, Texas. After earning a Broadcasting degree with a Theatre minor from Texas State University, I dove headfirst into the world of film and television, interning at Austin Film Society, Detour FilmProductions, and Troublemaker Studios. It was during this time that I realized how much I loved working with actors, a passion that grew while working at Beth Sepko Casting, Third Coast Extras, and eventually at Collier Talent Agency, where I spent nearly 17 years as an agent.
In January 2024, I decided it was time for a new chapter. I launched First Take, a consulting firm dedicated to teaching actors the business side of the industry. Through one-on-one sessions, workshops, and my membership program, Backstage Access, I get to share what I’ve learned over the years and help actors take their careers to the next level. It’s incredibly rewarding to offer personalized guidance and support, especially since First Take is the first of its kind in Texas—led by someone in the industry who isn’t an actor.
Outside of First Take, I’m deeply involved in the Austin creative community. I’m proud to serve on the Women in Film and Television Austin board, where I chair Community Partnerships, and I’ve had the chance to curate panels and events for Austin Entertainment Business (AEB). I also graduated from the Hispanic Austin Leadership program with the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in 2024.
Looking ahead to 2025, I’m excited to serve as a mentor at SXSW, host another casting panel with AEB, and roll out a new strategy for First Take to continue empowering actors at every stage of their careers. It’s been quite a journey, and I’m thrilled to see what’s next!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth roads are overrated. I think you learn the most when things don’t work out or when you face any type of adversity.
My journey in 2024 has been a mix of incredible highs and some of the hardest moments of my life. Starting First Take in January was a dream come true but also a big leap into the unknown. Shifting from nearly two decades as an agent into running my own business meant learning new skills, like marketing and managing operations, while figuring out how to make my vision stand out. It was exciting but overwhelming at times.
What made the year even more challenging was losing my dad to cancer in the spring. He was one of my biggest supporters, and his passing hit me hard. Balancing the grief of that loss with the demands of starting a new business was incredibly difficult. There were days when it felt impossible to focus or stay motivated, but I kept going because I knew he’d want me to. In many ways, his encouragement and belief in me continue to drive everything I do.
Despite the challenges, there have been bright spots that remind me why I chose this path. Seeing First Take grow, connecting with amazing clients, and finding new ways to support actors has been incredibly rewarding. Being involved in the Austin creative community, from working with Women in Film and Television Austin to organizing panels and mentoring, has also helped me stay grounded.
2024 has been a year of growth, resilience, and reflection. It hasn’t been easy, but I’m proud to be on it. My dad’s strength and support will always be with me as I continue building First Take and helping actors navigate their paths.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
First Take is a consulting firm I founded in January 2024 to help actors navigate the business side of their careers. I specialize in providing personalized guidance tailored to where each actor is in their journey—whether they’re just starting out or looking to take their career to the next level. Through one-on-one sessions, workshops, and my membership program, Backstage Access, I offer tools and insights to empower actors to make informed decisions, stand out in the industry, and achieve their goals.
What sets First Take apart is my unique perspective. I’m not an actor, but I’ve spent nearly two decades working in the industry, from casting to talent representation. As someone who’s been behind the scenes, I understand what it takes to succeed in this business, and I bring that knowledge to every service I offer. I also deeply value the individual needs of my clients—there’s no cookie-cutter advice here. Everything I do is designed to meet actors where they are and help them grow with intention.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of creating something that fills a gap in the industry. First Take is the first consulting firm of its kind in Texas, led by someone with my background. I’ve built a business that’s not just about teaching actors but also about being their advocate and a trusted resource in an industry that can feel overwhelming.
For anyone considering working with me, I want you to know that First Take is about more than just “the business.” It’s about building confidence, understanding your worth, and taking actionable steps toward your dreams. Whether it’s demystifying contracts, preparing for meetings with agents, or figuring out how to stand out in auditions, I’m here to guide you every step of the way.
I also believe in giving back and staying connected to the community. From mentoring at SXSW to curating panels for Austin Entertainment Business (AEB) and serving on the board of Women in Film and Television Austin, I’m passionate about creating opportunities for growth and collaboration in the industry. First Take isn’t just a business; it’s part of a larger mission to support and elevate creative talent.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The COVID-19 crisis was a turning point for the entertainment industry, and it taught me a lot about adaptability and the importance of building strong, resilient relationships. For actors, the pandemic changed how they audition, network, and even think about their careers. It highlighted the need for versatility—not just in their craft but also in their understanding of the business.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve carried into First Take is the value of being proactive. During the pandemic, actors who took the time to refine their materials, improve their skills, and stay engaged with the industry came out stronger. That’s something I emphasize with my clients: preparation is key, and you can always be working on something to move your career forward, even during uncertain times.
COVID-19 also reminded me how vital it is to build connections in a meaningful way. So much of the industry shifted online during the pandemic, and while the face-to-face interactions we’d relied on were gone, the virtual space opened up new possibilities. This inspired me to include flexible offerings at First Take, like virtual one-on-one sessions and workshops, to ensure actors have access to support no matter where they are.
Another lesson is that the business side of acting can feel overwhelming, especially during times of uncertainty. COVID made it clear that actors need trusted resources to guide them to stay afloat and thrive. First Take is all about helping actors feel equipped and confident to handle the unpredictable nature of this business.
Finally, the pandemic underscored the importance of mental health and balance. Many actors felt isolated and unsure of what the future held, and as a coach, I make it a point to acknowledge the emotional challenges of this career. It’s about more than just surviving the tough times; it’s about finding ways to thrive despite them. COVID-19 taught us all a lot about resilience, and that’s a mindset I strive to pass on to my clients.
