Today we’d like to introduce you to Katilyn Pummill.
Hi Katilyn , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Cosmic Plant Company was founded by two sister-in-laws with a shared love for plants and community.
Our business began in our backyard greenhouse in 2021, and quickly grew roots through local markets and pop-ups. We always dreamed of opening a brick-and-mortar shop in our hometown, and we had our eyes set on Gruene Historic District.
By a stroke of cosmic alignment, we stumbled upon a weathered sign on an old barn in downtown Gruene. A phone call, a leap of faith, and 12 months later, that very barn was lovingly reclaimed and transformed into our cozy little garden shop.
Since opening our doors on April 20th, 2023, we’ve been honored to be named “Best of ATX – Plant and Garden Shop”, and we’ve stayed joyfully busy in the heart of downtown Gruene.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road—but a meaningful one. In the early days, we were hauling plants, tables, and displays all over town for pop-ups and markets. It was incredibly rewarding, but physically demanding and exhausting at times. Once we found our dream location in Gruene, we hit an unexpected roadblock with building permits that delayed our opening by several months. It was frustrating and tested our patience, but we learned how to pivot, adapt, and keep moving forward.
Like many small business owners, we also faced the growing pains of launching something new—navigating everything from inventory to customer flow to being busier than we ever imagined right out of the gate! But even with the challenges, we’ve grown stronger and more grounded through it all. Every tough moment has been worth it to see the community we’ve built and the little dream that became a very real, thriving shop.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Cosmic Plant Company, we’re more than just a plant shop—we’re curators of beauty, creativity, and connection to the natural world.
We specialize in unique houseplants, garden goods, and thoughtfully designed plant-inspired gifts, but what we’re really known for is the experience. From the moment someone walks through our doors, we want them to feel inspired—to see the potential for creativity in their own space and to feel more connected to nature and themselves.
One of the things we’re most proud of brand-wise is the level of care and intentionality we bring to everything we do. Our shop is a reflection of our personal style and values, and we’re deeply committed to creating a space that feels welcoming, inspiring, and artfully curated. Whether it’s the way we style our displays, craft a social media post, host a community event, or choose what to stock on our shelves—every detail is considered with purpose and love.
We’re proud to offer something that feels different: a shop with soul. A place where every visit is a sensory experience, where you’re not just shopping—you’re dreaming, creating, and connecting. For us, it’s about sharing what we love with the community we love, and inviting others to slow down, explore, and grow something beautiful.
A favorite feature of our shop is our Potting Bar, where customers can bring in their plants to be repotted or work with us to create a custom arrangement. It’s a fun, interactive way for people to personalize their plant experience, get their hands dirty (if they want!), and leave with something uniquely theirs.
We host both public and private events, offering hands-on opportunities for people to learn, create, and connect. From planting nights and seasonal wreath-making to private parties and custom gatherings, we love creating memorable experiences that bring people together around plants and creativity.
How do you think about luck?
We’ve definitely had moments that felt like divine timing—stumbling across that barn in Gruene, calling the number on a whim, and finding a property manager who believed in our vision. Those moments felt lucky, but the truth is, it’s been less about luck and more about showing up consistently, working hard, and stepping out in faith.
Starting and growing this business has taken a lot of heart, risk, and dedication. We’ve poured ourselves into every part of it—physically, emotionally, and creatively. From hauling plants during pop-up days to navigating delays and unexpected challenges, we’ve learned that good things happen when you keep showing up, stay aligned with your purpose, and remain open to possibility.
So yes, we’ve had our share of good fortune—but we believe it met us halfway because we were willing to do the hard work.
