Hidden Gems: Meet Katy Manganella of Austin City Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Manganella.

Hi Katy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Smackdab at the height of the pandemic, in July 2020, I opened Austin City Counseling. A virtual mental health private practice, Austin City Counseling is based in central Austin. We primarily work with Austinites but can serve any Texan who connects with the Austin vibe.

Rewinding the tape, I finished grad school in 2011 and have a M.A. in Counseling Psychology with a specialization in Marriage & Family Therapy. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Texas and a Certified Yoga Teacher. When I finished grad school, I moved to NYC and worked in homeless services. I bounced around the country during my 20s in the pursuit of doing my part to end homelessness, which eventually led me to working on ending youth homelessness in Austin. In 2018, I left homeless services to go into private practice. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Parts have been smooth, parts have been bumpy. To be honest, the largest bumps I’ve run into have been internal: Belief in myself, overcoming fears and trusting myself to follow my gut. Interestingly, these are also issues I work with other people on now.

As you know, we’re big fans of Austin City Counseling. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Austin City Counseling is a virtual private practice. We see all of our clients via telehealth (video sessions). We specialize in working with Millennials and Gen Zs with anxiety. We are known for working with high achieving, perfectionistic types who are trying to learn to live life on their own terms so that they can feel more like themselves, happier, and fulfilled.

What sets us apart is that we are relentless in our pursuit of authenticity for both ourselves and others. I started Austin City Counseling with a deep desire to create a place where I could truly be myself. It’s my hope that others can feel that and that it gives them permission to do the same.

I am most proud of the relationships formed at Austin City Counseling. We work with the most incredible people, who have incredible lives, big hearts, and are committed to doing the work.

What I want people to know about Austin City Counseling is that if you’re looking for a more modern take on counseling and are connecting with anything here, reach out to us! We are also planning to expand our team in 2022, which is super exciting! Stay tuned for that.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
To be candid, I struggle with the word luck. Certainly, privilege has played a role in my life and business, but I’m not sure about luck. From this perspective, I’ve been privileged to meet super smart folks who have opened doors for me, coached me, and supported me in my growth both personally and professionally.

And as for bad luck? I suppose you could say the pandemic was bad luck for the timing of starting a business. But to be honest, it was also perfect timing for increasing therapy options for Austinites. So the bad luck on timing was also a “right time, right place” kind of thing.
