Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiiza Hussein Saddam.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It was way back in 2015 when I completed law school and just like many students, I was fascinated and absorbed with the idea of finding a job in a top league law firm around my city. But if you asked me privately whether its what I really wanted, I would most likely give a disappointing answer, I hated the idea of looking for jobs and cherished the idea of creating jobs and employ others.
Just like many graduates, I faced the reality of the world and began submitting my CV’S and job application to law firms and organizations to which I felt much attracted to. I did not receive any response for some time, and it downed on me that in this labor market, it’s not what you are capable of doing but rather who you know, Therefore I made some contacts and was able to land my first job interview, The job interview was not directly related to my legal profession but as you know, sometimes you have to go with what the market provides you with. Therefore, I had applied to become an assistant to the one of the foreign Countries Ambassador. I felt that I had performed well in the interview plus, I had a recommendation from our foreign minister of state, I waited for a response as to whether I had got the job but non was forthcoming, I was unhappy with my situation and had to confront the reality, either I continue giving pro bona services to people who need my free legal services, I mean most people who are victims of human rights violations or decide to change course and move to a new location and find something new. I later, decided that two years of free pro bono services were enough, for the time being, I need to move on and get paid for my skills and knowledge. I moved to Rwanda and luckily landed a consultation job with one of the medium law forms, it paid me well but I was still hungry for more so decided to take a job in one of the banks as a legal officer for a couple of months but still I hate the idea of working 9-10 hours seated all day, I was depressed and every day I was cursing, waiting for the day I would quit.
The time came and threw in the towel, I resigned and decided that time had come to start something of my own, but first, I consulted a number of people who worked for different firms. Others owned their own firms but the feedback was tormenting, 90% depicted a dark experience and so discourage me in some way. I did not heed to there advice. I went through the process of registering and opening my own firm business in 2019. From the saving I had put together, I bought office furniture and rented a house that worked both as my home and one section as my office. I developed different strategies and plans on how to move forward and develop but also market my business, It worked but after a few months of hard work and no pay but rather injecting all the savings I had plus borrowing from family and friends, After 1 year the business was stable, I would work at my own terms, do what felt was the right thing and developed the business values that I believed mattered in today’s world, climate change, human rights, and rule of law was central to me, Along with our team, we allocated funds and developed programs to support rural communities with various advanced tech renewable tools such as solar system, we empowered communities with access to justice training and free legal representations, Its no surprise that our firm and myself was awarded on by different institution for the positive work we have done to empower, transform and cause positive change in local poor communities and in peoples lives.
My message to future entrepreneurs or business owners or even employees is, to listen to yourselves first before you listen to others’ advice, most often people will discourage you to do what they have failed to do or have not gathered enough audacity to pursue their dream. Just do that that you felt would make a difference in your life including other people’s lives. at the end of the journey, you will not be disappointed with the amount of experience, progress, and success that you will have collected on the way.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For many there is nothing like a smooth road, somehow somewhere you will have to meet challenges, some challenges are as simple as sipping a glass of juice others require endurance, with me, the challenges I faced for example when establishing my own business required perseverance, I needed to remain patient, focused, disciplined and determined to succeed, thus all the challenges that crossed my way, I saw them as part of the process of growing and I was ready to confront them hands on!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
