Hidden Gems: Meet Kristina Cole of Cedar Cabin Honey Farm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Cole.

Kristina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My family purchased the property around 3 years ago and it came pre-stocked with honey bees for the agricultural tax exemption. I thought beekeeping was such an exciting idea since I have always loved science and nature and could share this experience with my kids. Plus, I love honey! I have been tending the bees and extracting honey, with the help of my bee mentor, and have been selling at local markets and by word of mouth requests from friends. I have loved getting more hands on with the bees and the honey extracting process.

I have also been renovating the two existing homes on the property and hope to have them available for weekend and short term rentals this year. This place is so peaceful and beautiful and I can’t wait to share it with as many people as possible. There are 12.44 acres of land with nature trails and tons of wildlife to explore and sit with and relax.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In regard to the beekeeping, hive loss has been my biggest obstacle. I have lost between 1-3 hives each year which is a big blow money and time wise to lose a hive. It is part of the process and normal to lose hives but it still stings when it happens. The most common reason for hive loss for me has been ants. It is incredibly difficult to do anything to kill ants that won’t also kill the bees so it can literally be a battle of the fittest. The hive has to be strong enough to beat the invading ants. To keep a hive strong they have to be kept fed and watered and well tended, however, sometimes it cannot be prevented.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Cedar Cabin Honey Farm?
Cedar Cabin Honey Farm is multifaceted. We produce and sell honey and are working toward opening our doors and gates soon to short term renters, educational tours, nature retreats, etc. I am proud of our dedication to preserving nature to the best of our ability and being a place of peace and calm for the animals and plants that live here. We keep interventions natural and do not allow hunting so deer seek refuge on our farm. The animals can always find a drink of water here since the bees need constant water sources.

Our honey is 100% natural and local as well as delicious. We are excited to get started with allowing people to rent the cabins and come and enjoy our little slice of heaven.
