Hidden Gems: Meet Kristy Owen of 365 Things Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Owen.

Hi Kristy , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
365 Things Austin started as a New Year’s resolution. I was a real estate agent and probably 22 at the time. I figured people might not buy a house from me based on experience but if I was a girl that knew a lot about what was “cool” or happening in Austin someone may give me a chance. While I only sold two houses, 365 Things Austin took off. It was early in the social media world, Instagram didn’t even exist back then and Facebook wasn’t pay to play yet. So I hit Facebook at just the right time to let 365 grow organically. I think the “doing one thing every day concept” was easy for people to handle and embrace. We were and still are consistent with our content, which is another factor that I think has led to our success. Eventually, I completely stopped working in real estate, hired Jason Neff to help take 365 from a hobby to a business. To be honest, the company has grown very organically from the start, advertisers come to us, we have great local partners, it’s been a fun adventure.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a fairly smooth road. One of the biggest struggles is that Social Media is always changing, it’s something that you are never going to master. There are always new algorithms, platforms, and strategies, so staying on top of those and deciding where to invest your time can be difficult. But it also keeps things from getting stagnant.

I would not say this is an obstacle but a challenge that comes with the job. Is embracing the ever-changing and growing city of Austin while remembering and honoring the aspects of Austin that have made Austin, Austin.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about 365 Things Austin?
We are a social media company that features at least one thing to do each day in Austin, Texas. We don’t tell you the EVERYTHING there is going on it Austin, we do our best to curate the best events and activities on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

We also hold our own 365 events from time to time. We host a Sausage Kings of Austin which is always fun. Local sausage purveyors come out and attendees vote on who will be named the Sausage King of Austin. We also have partnerships with lots of local companies so we offer fun experiences like floating the river, Bunch Boats and Bat Boats on Lady Bird Lake, and seasonal activities like Wheels To Wurstfest where we provide safe, roundtrip transportation to Wurstfest in New Braunfels.

365 strives to work with clients who we believe in, so even our paid campaigns are campaigns we have vetted. We say no to ad requests daily when we don’t think they fit our brand voice or image.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
That’s a great question. I don’t think I have a specific one actually. In general, I would say that it was going to the lake. That has been a place that my family has gone for years, we’ve brought friends, and extended family had holidays, and birthday’s there, taught friends to wakeboard, ski, dogs to swim and even jet ski. It’s been a place that has nothing but good memories and lots of laughs. I have been making memories there since I was about seven, so it is hard to pick just one.
