Today we’d like to introduce you to LaKia Moore.
Hi LaKia; please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started making jewelry when I was 7. My great-grandmother would make my cousins and me bracelets for Christmas. She had to move in with my grandma because she was getting sick. That’s when I became an unpaid worker, lol. She taught me how to use crimp beads and connect closures. I learned patterns and sizing. This went on for about 6 years. After a while, she gave me a list, and I made them all while she made our sweatshirts. We stopped making jewelry closer to her death because of her dementia, but I retained the knowledge of how to make clasp jewelry. In my late 20s, I started making jewelry again. Rosaries, taking earrings and making them bracelets centerpieces. At that time, the business was called “Sharmayne’s Way.” I did this for a while until life did what life does. At that time, I moved to Phoenix, AZ, fostered a few kids and became a semi-old lady with multiple autoimmune diseases and ailments. I started “A Complicated Melody Poetry & Jewelry” in January 2021. I just had a hysterectomy and was bored out of my mind. I bought some beads from Amazon and started making bracelets from my bed. 2 years later, I have become better with my beading and known in the community as the girl with the crystal bracelets that do oracle readings. June 2023, ACM Jewelry was born from the previous name. We have a new logo and merch. Same goal, just an updated look. I have become a full-time business owner. This is what life should be. I found the smile that I lost many times in the beading process. This is it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, I went through a lot of physical and mental changes. I lost babies and had mental breakdowns. Recently, I left a toxic work environment. I used to let those things stop me from creating. Now, it’s my haven.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about ACM Jewelry?
We have jewelry that soothes your soul. Our work assists you in chakra alignment and spiritual cleansing. I am the main designer and beader. I am 1 of 3 people with ACM Jewelry. My daughters, Sharmayne and Allyssa, are my co-owners. I set the business up this way so the girls own something when I am gone. I trained them how to run the business and make jewelry. What sets us apart from others is that we won’t need to make simple bracelets. Everything has to have an intricate pattern. We adorn all bracelets with crowns or charms and only use 8mm beads. What I’m most proud of with our brand is the adversity we have overcome. As my kids say, “Life is life.” But we fight tooth and nail to keep going. We offer bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and oracle readings. You can find us all over Texas and the US at vendor events or on our website, www.acmpoetryandjewelry.com.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it involved you, and any essential lessons or epiphanies you can share?
We did because it started during Covid-19. Sanitizing was a huge priority. Every piece was wiped down, saged, and then packaged with care.
