today we would like to introduce Macy Nettleton and Ashlee Willis of Shee Properties.
Hi Macy and Ashlee, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My business partner Ashlee and I started Shee Properties at her kitchen table in September 2022. We both had been laid off from our long-term corporate jobs during the pandemic and had to start completely from scratch. We met while working at a real estate brokerage in Austin, where we helped investor clients buy and sell distressed real estate. We worked for the brokerage for 2 years and watched many clients succeed in transforming these investment properties, but we also witnessed a lot of flops. It felt like sitting on the sidelines of a fascinating game while continuing to gain more and more knowledge by watching others.
In September, at that kitchen table, we realized that with both of our skills, we could make a splash in this business by offering a turnkey service for anyone who wanted to get in on the real estate game. Whether that meant buying distressed property and having us transform it back on the market or turning a slab and some cement walls into a wildly successful Airbnb, we could do it all without our clients lifting a finger.
In our short time as a business, we have transformed an empty hard-to-sell property in central Austin into a Bachelorette party pad, have built a lakeside paradise from a foundation and cinderblock walls, and changed our client’s outdated 2nd home into his retirement dream home.
Ashlee has an amazing eye for design and can see the potential everywhere she looks. She can breathe life into a space and see a finished home in her mind before most people can. The secret sauce for us is having such a strong partnership between Ashlee and me and constantly supporting each other where we thrive.
I love real estate. I find the thrill of finding a good property so invigorating. I like to think of myself as more of the behind-the-scenes gal. I like to keep the machine rolling so Ashlee can reach her full creative potential knowing the wheels will not fall out from under her. It’s like a perfect relay race. I like the thrill of finding the business, finding the properties, and getting the contracts lined up so I can hand the baton to Ashlee, and she can run like the wind.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business is never a smooth road, and we face challenges every day. One of our hardest challenges is knowing our worth and convincing others we are worth it. Even when we present our portfolio of these amazing transformations we have done in such a short period as a business, we both still get a sense of imposter syndrome. Are we good enough? Is it crazy to ask someone to pay this amount for our services? Am I a good businesswoman? Am I a good designer? The list can go on and on.
Another struggle we have faced that may start as a struggle but has ended up as a good thing almost every single time is the art of pivoting. Even in our short time as a business, we have changed directions 100 times. Our original business plan was very Airbnb management-focused. Our whole business was going to be based around finding, furnishing, and managing Airbnb’s for others, but whoops, surprise, we both prefer to avoid managing properties. But when we were designing and furnishing these properties, it was a thrill like no other. So we pivoted. Every day we learn something new. We find new things that we love and hate about being in this business, and it’s the art of pivoting that has created so much flexibility and room to try so many things and figure out what makes us not only good at this job but outstanding. Like we always say, “Pivot or die.”

Real Estate is a fickle pickle; we all know that! But I also know opportunities in any market are endless. You have to have the right guide. Design trends change over time, but the key to success is client-centric design rather than what’s in style. Flexibility is and will continue to be the name of the game, as having the ability to bring our client’s vision to life, whatever that looks like for them.
