Hidden Gems: Meet Maritza Rodriguez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maritza Rodriguez.

Hi Maritza, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from Sul Ross State University in 2002 with a B.A. in Psychology. I moved to Austin around this time to pursue some type of job in the helping profession but ended up working at a child development center in South Austin. This is where my passion with working with children originated. In 2005, I became a private school educator teaching both kindergarten and 1st grade for a total of seven years.

During my time teaching, I was also pursuing my Master’s degree in counseling. In 2009, I graduated with my M.A. in Counseling from St. Edward’s University. I began an internship with the Hays Caldwell Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse in 2012. I conducted counseling prevention groups with students in Hays CISD and would also assist on the clinical side providing psych educational Intensive Outpatient groups for individuals who were court-mandated to attend as part of their legal commitment. I completed my clinical internship in 2014 and became a social worker in AISD for the next seven years. I conducted individual and group counseling for students in 2 Title 1 school and was a Social-Emotional facilitator on my campus for four years.

At the present time, I recently opened my own private practice in Buda as a child therapist. I conduct individual and group counseling and find that play intervention with my clients is most effective and a passion of mine. It is with hope that I can provide support and hope for those who wish to receive counseling services. My supervision course consisted of a 40-hour Supervisor Training. I became an LPC-S in 2019 and look forward in assisting interns accomplishing a state licensure for an LPC.

I have extensive knowledge working with children who experience anxiety, ODD, depression, anger management, mindfulness practices, and adjustment building (children who have experienced loss of a loved one, divorce, or experience major life changes). I also have eight years of experience within the public school system and understand the needs some students may experience with classroom accommodations or modifications. I am here to lend a helping hand to assist children in their time of need and allow them to grow and learn during the counseling process. I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with an anticipated completion by 2023.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not always been easy. Most of my experience has been accomplished while working full time and completing my education in the evening. I also became a mother in 2010 and had to devote time to my family in the middle of an internship. My issue has always been “time.” There is just never enough time during the day to complete all of my tasks!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I started my private practice in June 2021 in Buda, TX. Clinical Therapy Services/Specializations: Play Intervention, Art Intervention, Sand Tray Therapy, Individual Counseling and Therapy Sessions.

These techniques are effective in treating children who might be suffering from the following: Anxiety, Depression, Relationship Issues, Grief and Loss, Parenting, Panic Attacks, Insomnia, Stress, Anger, Fatigue, Dealing with Illness.

My primary therapeutic method is… Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which is a form of psychotherapy that treats problems and increases happiness by modifying dysfunctional behaviors, thoughts, and emotions. CBT focuses on solutions and encourages clients to challenge distorted cognitions and change destructive patterns of behavior. CBT is appropriate for individuals of all ages and can benefit numerous conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorders, OCD and many other disorders. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be utilized both with face-to-face and online sessions.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
First and foremost, I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish my journey without my faith in God and the support from my family, especially my husband, Eric. One of the most important qualities in this journey was the ambition to never give up (believe me, there were many times I just wanted to throw in the towel and quit).
