Hidden Gems: Meet Mathew Aguilar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mathew Aguilar.

Hi Mathew, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, my name is Mathew Aguilar and I work in the Austin/Bastrop Area as a Realtor for RE/MAX Bastrop Area. I am 40 years old, married and have an amazing and wild toddler who thinks he is already 16. My passion is Real Estates and here is just a little background on how I got started:

I grew up watching my dad build each home we ever lived in and always found it fascinating watching how it all came together. But what I didn’t know is that later in life, I would somehow end up working in the same industry myself. Not only did I love selling and buying real estate, but I learned I have a passion for new construction. But like any kid, I rebelled at first and didn’t listen and just ended up doing odd jobs here and there until my late 20s. Then something hit me and said, “What are you doing? You are better than this”. I needed to listen to my true calling. So one day, I quit my full-time job and got my real estate license. From that point on, it has been an amazing adventure. I am going on my 8th year now in the industry and I am continuously improving my business in every way. I love helping people with one of the most important purchases or sales that they will ever make. The process can be not only an emotional roller coaster but very difficult at times. I am now working on getting my broker’s license and hope to have it before the end of the year. My goal is to push myself to a new level and start my own team and then eventually own my own brokerage.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Everybody wants to be a realtor these days. They imagine a glamorous life with easy money and no work. The truth is, real estate is an extremely difficult career to break into, especially for a new agent. The first few years are critical as there is not really a steady income flow and marketing expenses are huge. You have to really put yourself out there and learn who and what kind of Realtor you are. People always ask me what the hardest part is, and it’s branding yourself and gaining the trust of people.  Fortunately for me, I have a very supporting husband that pushed me and helped me get started. We even worked as a team on a few projects. Now that my business is growing, I have encountered other struggles along the way, with the last one being the pandemic. Real estate is a never-ending learning process and you have to constantly adapt if you want to be successful.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I have been a realtor for almost nine years, currently under RE/MAX Bastrop area. I help with both the selling and buying sides of real estate and I am also very involved with builders on new constructions. I love my town and I am heavily involved in local charities and in community activities. I am a board of directors member of the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce and last year I won Best Realtor of Bastrop County 2021. I am now in the process of obtaining my broker’s license and look forward to my next career step.

What matters most to you?
My family is the most important thing in my life. I have a wonderful husband and a three year old boy who continually support me and provide inspiration in the things I do at work. My clients are super important to me. I strive to provide exceptional customer service to meet their ever changing needs. Some of my clients have become lifelong friends and a part of my family.
