Today we’d like to introduce you to Nonye Nduaguba.
Hi Nonye, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Nonye Hair Braiding began in the early period when I had just graduated college. My love for math and statistics drove me to apply for MBA graduate programs. When I moved to Austin, Texas with my family for graduate school, I noticed there was a niche in the hair braiding industry that needed to be filled. With my passion for hair and educational background, I knew I would be able to have a positive impact on my community by providing exceptional service. My strategy was to add value to my clients by putting their needs first, while creating an environment that encouraged self-expression.
In the 15 years that I have been able to service Austin, I have worked to engage the community outside of hair braiding in a salon, by creating memorable experiences. Over this period, I have been able to provide job opportunities, support local charities, held seminars teaching others on hair care, and serviced local festivals such as SXSW.
Living in Austin and raising my children here makes me passionate for growth and progress. This passion has allowed me to invest my time, energy and resources in my community. With each client that come into my business, I see an opportunity to positively impact someone’s life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a small business owner, I have had a lot of struggles. My greatest challenge has been time. Having to work in the business during the day, and on the business after work hours leaves me with very little time for family and other activities. Having to create, promote, market, advertise and manage the salon, means I often work long hours in order to ensure the success of my business.
Staffing has also been a struggle in years past because it is important for me to find good employees who are equally skilled and professional; aligning with the vision here at Nonye Hair Braiding.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Nonye Hair Braiding Salon?
At Nonye Hair Braiding, it is our mission to provide our customers with professional and friendly service that is specialized to meet their individual needs and wishes. We specialize in protective styles and care for hair of all textures. I believe that expanding our skills, continuing education, and openness to being creative have set Nonye Hair Braiding apart from other competing salons. We have challenged ourselves to be innovative by creating unique hairstyles such as tree braids and hand-making locs for faux locs installation. Our unique experiences have allowed us to think outside the box and provide specialized services to our clients.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My biggest supporters have been my immediate family. They believed in me even when I was at my lowest and needed support. They have stepped in to help me babysit and clean when I had long days ahead, encouraged me during challenging seasons, and had helped me in some of the day-to-day duties at my salon. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without their relentless support and love. I also want to acknowledge my wonderful employees. Their hard work and dedication to what we do at Nonye Hair Braiding have significantly contributed to the success of my business, and allowed me to see my dream flourish to reality. I would also like to take time and show appreciation to my supportive clients, who have been part of this journey from the very beginning, as well as those who are new. I am forever grateful for your patronage.
Most importantly, I would like to give all the glory and honor to God. He has blessed me and has guided my footsteps. Even in the midst of difficult periods, He gave me assurance and the strength to keep pushing forward.
