Hidden Gems: Meet Robert Potts of Cochran, Blair, and Potts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Potts.

Hi Robert, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When people ask how it all started, we tell them it goes all the way back to 1869. That’s when Col. H. M. Cook opened a small mercantile known as the Cook Mercantile Company. It began in Centerville, Texas, but like many early Texas businesses, the store followed opportunity—and the railroad. The store moved to Buffalo before finally settling on an entire block in downtown Belton in 1884. The building has been home ever since.

Over the years, as sons and sons-in-law joined and later stepped away from the business, the name changed right along with the family. Between 1869 and 1917, it evolved five times before becoming Cochran, Blair & Potts Department Store—a name that’s been part of this community for more than a century now.

In 1970, my grandparents Roy and Jean Potts purchased full ownership. My dad, Rob Potts Sr., eventually took over operations, and today the seventh generation—My wife, Ashley and I —continue the tradition. The values that guided the store in the beginning still guide us today.

We’re proud to be the oldest department store in Texas, but what means even more to us is that the business has stayed in the same family for seven generations. There’s a historical marker on the side of the building that tells part of that story, but the rest lives on inside—every day the doors open, customers walk in, and another chapter of Cochran, Blair & Potts continues.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
