Hidden Gems: Meet Sonya Benjamin of Vessel + Spirit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonya Benjamin.

Hi Sonya, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I would say that how Vessel + Spirit came to be would probably be through my own existential crisis. After the loss of several loved ones in a short span of time, about a decade ago, I just started questioning my life: who am I and if I’m living as I’ve been told I should, then why do I feel so unsatisfied and don’t feel like I belong? As these questions continued to come up and got louder over time, eventually it just couldn’t be ignored anymore. Through a personally dedicated spiritual and self development journey, I have slowly found and cultivated space and a deep level of support to share with other highly sensitive, deeply empathic and creative spirits trying to maneuver this overwhelming and overstimulated world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Haha! Yes and no? I always tell people if they want a direct line to deep self works then open a business. Every insecurity and story of my self-worth has been deeply embedded into the unfolding of Vessel + Spirit. Over the last seven years, I have had to been pretty consistently confronted by my own self-doubt. Imposter syndrome is real and I’ve had to become very close friends with it as it has peaked its head out over the years of cultivation, but without these stories being in my face and activating the hell out of me, I wouldn’t be as deeply rooted to my authentic, true self as I am today. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still quite human, but I love more of myself today than I use to.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Vessel + Spirit?
Vessel + Spirit is for those seeking to live a deeply, embodied life. I tend to call in highly sensitive, empathic, deep feeling, and creative spirits.

I have several services that offer a deep level of support to those that seek this embodied lifestyle. I offer one on one and in-person sessions that have several iterations that could include bodywork, Reiki, cupping and sound therapy. Each session is customized to meet each client where they are on their own journey. Together we start to build a connection to their own somatic sensing awareness so they can begin living from a more embodied space.

I also host meditation+Sound bath experiences along with Reiki+Resonance classes to work in groups and to support my clients in cultivating a personal practice and connection to their own resonance. This allows them to integrate an energetic perspective into their daily life as they navigate this wild human life.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What’s best about Austin is the supportive communities that are available for the many types of people and interests out there. Having some people that support you and see you makes it all worthwhile.

What can be challenging is definitely how crowded it’s all gotten. For someone that has been here for 20 years, I miss the days when you could get anywhere in Austin in 10 mins and show up for anything without a line, but growth is inevitable.
