Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Sullivan.
Hi Stephanie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Stephanie Sullivan is a seasoned interior designer with over two decades of experience in the Austin area. She has a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Jackson State University and is also an Associate member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). She has leveraged her background in commercial and residential project management, furniture sales, and insurance adjusting in corporate America to build Stephanie Sullivan Interior Designs. A firm dedicated to assisting individuals undergoing lifestyle changes.
Stephanie transitioned to interior design full-time in 2014, driven by a spiritual calling. Stephanie Sullivan Interior Designs was built to serve as a ministry, aiding individuals through transitions. She has held the Financial Chair position on the Texas Chapter of the ASID board. Her most notable project to date has been assisting her church Greater Zion Church, in FF&E for a new $15M build. She has also worked on numerous residential and commercial projects like the Girl Scouts of Central Texas ($3.1M), Plaza De Cortez Commercial Offices ($3.5M), Anderson Oaks Apartment Complex ($4.6M), and Monte Vista Condominiums Models.
Stephanie offers a broad spectrum of services including Bathroom and Bedroom Design, Color Consulting, Custom Furniture design, and much more. Her service area spans multiple locations including Anderson Mill, Austin, Bee Cave, Brushy Creek, Cedar Park, and others.
She has been recognized multiple times for her work, with awards including USA Top Ten To Watch – Black Interior Designers Association (2016), Achievement in Black Austin (2017), Top Twenty African American Interior Designers (2017-2018), and the 2017 Designer Kujichagulia Award.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
None of this has been a smooth road. I’ve started and stopped too many times to count. I have this vision of being homeless on the street, trying to live my dream of interior design. I know this doesn’t align with the Word of God; Proverb 18:16 says, “A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.” However, the main issue has been the need for more diversity and inclusion in the interior design industry. It’s as segregated as a Sunday Morning at church. It needs to be more welcoming and inviting. I could no longer walk into rooms where I could feel the tension in the room. The “Who is she, and Why is she here?” The discrimination was open and obvious even with holding a board position in ASID. With bidding for jobs to get “A Seat At The Table.” We have a long way to go.
I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Stephanie Sullivan Interior Designs?
I am a Commercial and Residential Interior Designer; when working in commercials, I love the pace and action that drives the project. However, when I’m working on a residential project, my heart is involved, and this causes me to dig deeper into making it the best project possible. My niche/brand is people who are in transition; the children have gone off to college; what can we do with that space? We have retired, and the children are gone; how do we make this home suit our needs in this season of my life? I live for those projects.
