Inspiring Conversations with Alex Hoffman of Safe Space Healing Collective, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Hoffman

Hi Alex, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am both a product and a provider of therapy! Coming from a blended family, I feel like my story is the quintessential middle-class American story. What looks super cookie cutter from the outside, held lots of challenging experiences behind closed doors.
Throughout my high school years, I had a hard shift with my mental health and molded those trials into opportunities to build grit and resilience. So much so, that I found myself graduating a year early from high school! From there, i found myself at Texas Tech for two years only to finish my degree at Texas State University. I absolutely fell in love with central Texas and followed my passion of working with people and connecting with a variety of different populations.
My first job out of college, I was working in the non-profit sector working for Dr. Oz’s non-profit organization called HealthCorps. The placement was in West Palm Beach, Florida where I knew a whopping – no one! I moved out to a new place and took on a job that had me providing health programming in an under resourced school. During this time, I was afforded the opportunity to act as a mentor for the students in a local high school surrounding: mental, physical, and nutritional wellness. While I loved working in the school system, I found it came with a lot of red tape! With that, I decided to move forward with pursuing my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health counseling back in my hometown of Houston, Texas.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Surly not! Again, I come from a blended family that has its own set of challenges. Also, growing up, while things might have seemed hunky dory from the outside, I was really struggling with my mental health during my teens. I was very fortunate to have had parents that helped me to seek resources like medication and counseling. Even so, those resources did not come without their own challenges. I was misdiagnosed early on and that made finding the right medication rather difficult overall. Further, I had experiences with therapists that ended up not being great fits. In time though, i found all the right practitioners for me and learned how to advocate for myself in health settings. I learned how to communicate my needs with the right professionals and started learning the tools I needed to thrive in life.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Safe Space Healing Collective, LLC?
Safe Space Healing Collective is on its way to becoming a whole self health and wellness center! Safe Space Healing Collective exists to provide a safe space for individuals with CPTSD, young adults (18-30), LGBTQIA+ identity exploration, and couples. Over here, we believe in fostering a whole mind, body and soul healing journey instead of masking any wounds, or ignoring underlying sources of issues. Our mission is reimagining the way you heal! We’re not much for the idea of going to some stuffy office and having to dish all about the terrible things that have happened in our lives only to have to button back up all nicely and exit back into the real world. At Safe Space, we are so much more into the idea of walking into a place that allows you to kick your shoes off, cozy up, settle into your skin and then start talking about what’s truly going on in your world. Counseling should offer the nurturing support and tough love that we all need in our lives. You know, those -cut through the crap, but say it in a nice way- kind of moments?!

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Oh gosh – everyone in my life deserves credit. I wouldn’t be half the woman I am today if it weren’t for the relationships I have had along the way. At the root, my family has always shown me the importance of embracing people from. all walks of life and working hard for what you believe in. I am eternally grateful to my parents for instilling strong values and morals. Beyond the two of them, my support system includes my brothers, extended family, friends that became family have all been there helping me through the difficult times and helping to bolster me throughout all of these years. Every single one of these individuals have shown me what it means to be loved and how to offer it freely to those I surround myself with. Not to mention some of the greatest business mentors throughout my education and career. My list is ever flowing when it comes to those I could thank along the way.
