Inspiring Conversations with Alex Keay of Camper Alex RV

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Keay.

Hi Alex, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was at a fork in the road moment in my life in 2022.

I was in between getting a job at a church as an outreach director or going to trade school and becoming a RV technician and starting my own business for the first time. After taking a week to speak with mentors and pray, I decided to decline the position at the church and apply for a place at the National RV Training Academy, NRVTA. On the last day of the week I was taking to decide as I was in the parking low walking into church, on the back of a pick up truck in big bold red letters it said MOBILE RV REPAIR. I took this as a sign that I was making the right decision.

The training school was great because of the hands-on training, but my real skill set was developed over a year and a half while living in Colorado with my wife. There were plenty of challenging moments such as being in below zero with windchill weather and dark because of winter where I was yelling at a water heater because it would not work. There were many formative times while in Colorado and it was the place where I was able to really see what was possible with this business.

Our mission at Camper Alex RV is to revolutionized the RV repair industry through expertly train technicians and an exceptional customer experience. It was in Colorado, where I really learned the value of integrity, clear communication, and connecting with clients. It was also the place where I began developing the training program that I now use to train current technicians.

My wife and I moved back to Texas in February 2024 to buy a house and have a baby. My business did not transfer so I had to start from scratch again but this time with a lot more experience. In the first year of being back, we were able to service over 250 clients and rack up 100 five star reviews. Numbers that have increased since then.

Late in 2025 was a moment to scale the business. It was a “build it and they will come” type of moment because we weren’t exactly in a position to hire anyone on. I took the leap of faith and hired on a full-time and part-time technician and we implemented the training program and began servicing the greater Austin area even more.

As we move into 2026 the plan is to continue to expand in Austin to bring our vision to as many RV owners as possible. There have been many joys and many challenges and being a small business owner over these first three years and it gets me really excited for what’s to come in these next three.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has certainly not been smooth. I mentioned a couple in the last question but another one that stands out is the changing of markets.

In Colorado 80% of my clients owned the RV as a vacation vehicle so the interactions, communication, service offering, and repair needs where unique to that market. When I moved to Texas, 80% of the people that live in RVs here do so full-time. This caused me to pivot in my communication and service offerings to make sure that I was offering the best service for the people that lived here.

I say often that you learn in business by wasting time and wasting money, so there have been countless numbers of times where I’ve ordered the wrong parts or forgot to turn off the electricity and fried a circuit board or missed something quite obvious that led me down hours on the road to nowhere. Nothing about an RV is straightforward which makes this job fun and exciting. I feel a little bit like Sherlock Holmes because we are always looking for clues to try and piece together what happened. There have been many times where I ask interesting questions like, “what direction was the sun pointing when this problem happened” or “do you only notice this issue when you flush the toilet?”, all of these things make the job challenging and exciting all at the same time.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was naturally curious, hands-on, and always tinkering with something. I enjoyed figuring out how things worked and fixing them once they were broken—sometimes taking them apart before they were broken just to learn. Personality-wise, I was a the class clown but driven, but also pretty relational. I liked being part of a team and helping others, whether that was friends, family, or classmates.

I’ve always had a mix of technical and creative interests. I enjoyed problem-solving, working with my hands, and learning practical skills, but I was also drawn to building ideas—thinking ahead, improving systems, and asking “why” or “how could this be better?” That combination has followed me into adulthood and into business ownership.

Looking back, a lot of what defines my work today was forming early on: a desire to serve people well, take pride in quality work, and do things with integrity.
