Inspiring Conversations with Art of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Art of Austin.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After moving to Austin in 2007 and becoming immersed in the art scene, I felt inspired and invigorated by the amount of creatives I was able to connect with here. I bought the domain artofaustin.com in 2010 with the intention of showcasing and highlighting the thriving artistic community here. I felt like the artists I was meeting and creating with needed an additional outlet – a deeper exploration and a way to connect the public not just to the artwork but to the artist behind the work. In 2016 we officially launched our brand, website, and social. We started a monthly featured artist showcase which included interviews of each month’s artists to get to know more about them and their personal story and what lead them to Austin. To date, we have featured 60 artists here in our fine town and have grown into a large collective of like-minded creatives.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We have been fortunate simply because there is no shortage of extremely talented artists here in Austin. It’s a pretty unique creative utopia – a place where artists really support other artists and work collectively. We are blessed to have gotten to help grow our creative community over the years and highlight so many of its members. It’s been a smooth road for us because we simply tap into the creative spirit and community that has always been in Austin’s DNA.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Art of Austin was established in 2010 with a few simple goals in mind:

To be a comprehensive and easy to use guide for the multitude of creative events happening everyday around our wonderful town;

To be an advocate for the local artist, helping raise awareness and promote sustainability for Austin’s thriving artistic community;

To be a voice and accessible showcase for local artists looking to expand their audiences and further promote their personal brands.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I really don’t attribute much to luck – I lean more towards persistence and consistency. That being said, we are absolutely lucky here to have so many creative beings that want to connect and get to know one another – I feel like that’s a big part of what draws so many artists here to Austin.
