Inspiring Conversations with Brittany Lerma of In The Moment Microschool

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Lerma.

Hi Brittany, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In The Moment Microschool became an idea when I was homeschooling my kids and going to grad school to get my masters in elementary education. I always wanted to be a teacher but I wanted to do it differently. I wanted to truly make a difference in a child’s educational journey. I began doing research of ways I could teach and came across the term “microschools”. I had interviewed at a few places but it just wasn’t what i was looking for. So, I decided to start my own microschool. I first started in-home and within a year and a half I secured a building that would be solely dedicated to my school. In The Moment Microschool started as a dream and became a reality in January 2024.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting In The Moment Microschool definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. With any small business, trying to start was the biggest hurdle. Along the way I have come into some financial struggles that almost had me shut down one of my classes but thankfully that never happened. It’s been a journey and definitely not an easy one but it’s worth it and it’s only going up from here.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
In The Moment Microschool is a small private school for pre-k-5th grade. We focus on strong academics, social-emotional learning, and hands-on, nature-based experiences.

We pride ourselves on being an inclusive community that nurtures the whole child. Our teachers meet students exactly where they are by setting individualized goals that support their unique growth.

By blending the heart of a nature school with the structure of a rigorous academic program, we create a learning environment where children feel supported, challenged, and inspired every day.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Along this journey, I’ve been blessed with incredible support. My family has been my foundation—always cheering me on, believing in me, and stepping in whenever I needed them. Whether it was helping create, clean, and organize our new building or caring for my kids during long work days and late nights, they made it possible for me to keep going. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
I also want to honor my co-teacher, Mrs. Sarina, who joined us in our second year. Her faith in this school and unwavering support have played a huge part in our growth. She sees the vision, believes in the mission, and has stood beside me through the challenges that come with building a business from the ground up. I am deeply grateful for her partnership and commitment.
