Inspiring Conversations with Candace Poindexter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candace Poindexter.

Hi Candace, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Candace and I’m the owner of Poindexter Confections. As a little girl, I looked forward to Saturdays at my granny’s house. She would make these gigantic homemade biscuits that would melt in your mouth and she would always have her favorite cake available after our big breakfast! That pineapple coconut cake was the talk of the town. I just remember how her baked goods always put a smile on our faces and how good everyone felt after eating and I wanted to make people feel like that! From the age of 12, I always had some type of business, from making earrings to baking cakes. She was an always will be the reason why great tasting cakes are my top priority. I have a cousin who also has a bakery back home because of these very same reasons. I’m originally from Memphis, TN and I moved to Texas seven years ago on nothing but faith, hope and a prayer. I had three small children at the time and was told that it was not a smart decision to make such a big move without a support system or family in place here, but I did anyway and it was the best decision that I could have ever made! I was worked for the state of Texas for about three years and was advancing very fast, until my middle child, who had chronic asthma became very ill. I always knew that I wanted to own multiple businesses and be my own boss and prayed about it often, but it wasn’t until my daughter was being rushed to the hospital from school and I had to leave work, when my supervisor asked me did I have anyone else that could go with her because I needed to finish an assignment, that it was time for me to step out on faith for real. I had some clientele for cakes already because I always had what most called a side hustle, so I was scared but I knew it had to be done. I made a decision not to ever have to choose between my children and my job ever again. I pulled my child out of school and began homeschooling and baking cakes full time. I even offered homeschool baking classes.

At the time I was only doing pound cakes and layered dessert cakes with no custom designs. One of my regular customers asked me had I considered doing more custom designs for cakes because my cakes were so savory and moist, if I were to add designs to them it would change the game for me. I told her no I hadn’t tried and the next time she picked up, she brought me a box of fondant and told me to give it a try. I tried and it was the beginning of what would be an amazing journey for me and my company. I had always been intentional about making great tasting desserts because I had always run into these beautiful amazing looking cakes that were absolutely breathtaking but when cut into they tasted like cardboard, so I wanted to focus on taste more than anything. Poindexter Confections’ motto is “you deserve great cake!” I stand by this motto with every customer that I come in contact with. Today, I not only own Poindexter Confections but all three of my children have businesses that I manage. My 11 year old son owns Ken’s Flavored Lemonade. My 13&15 year old daughters own My Sister’s Jewelry, which includes amazing resin art pieces. I’m a busy woman these days but I’m loving every bit of it!!!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my biggest obstacles was basically having to start from scratch. I had to meet new people and put my brand out there. I quickly met and built my own family away from family. I had to adjust quickly and be able to maintain the business and raise my children. They are all preteens and teens now, so life is a little easier these days.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I specialize in creating great looking and definitely great tasting cakes and desserts. I’m so glad that my work speaks for itself and a lot of my business is from other customers who have tried my products and told their friends, families and co-workers about it. I want every reader to know that great tasting cake matters! And when customers know that it matters to you, they will always come back.

How do you define success?
Success for me is creating a legacy that I can leave to my children to carry on to their children. True success is also having peace about what you do every day and how you make an impact on the lives of everyone that you come in contact with. And success definitely means loving the journey that life has given you while treating others how you want to be treated.
